Detroit Lions’ team Jamaal Williams revealed that he’s a fan of Naruto with a cold nod to the anime as he introduces himself as “Swagg Kazekage.”
The NFL’s Jamaal Williams, running back to the Detroit Lions, shows his appreciation for Naruto with an interesting reference to the anime in Sunday Night Football.
Williams, who goes by the name @/jswaggdaddy on Twitter, introduces himself to viewers as “The First Kazekage Swagg, leader of the Hidden Village of Den.” His comment refers to Kazekage, the leader of Sunagakure no Sato (Hidden Village of the Sand). Additionally, Williams wears a custom hitai-ate headband, a forehead protector commonly seen in anime. His headband features a custom-made metal plate featuring the iconic Detroit Lions logo.
NFL fans were quick to respond to the tweet with comments like: “So glad you took this picture, I think I’m hallucinating at the mention of Naruto!” and “He’s the real-life version of Gaara.” One fan even took the time to explain to viewers who were misheard of what he was saying that Williams said “den,” potentially referring to The Lion’s Den, saying, “Probably did. say “The Den” aka The Lion’s Den, maybe? “
The NFL’s Surprising Anime Love
The occasion isn’t the first time the NFL has made an anime reference. Most recently, on January 7, the Jacksonville Jaguars shared an Attack on Titan poster that featured it running backwards in place of the series’ protagonist Eren Yeager ahead of their AFC South battle against Tennessee Titans. In true protagonist style, the Jaguars went on to win the AFC South Championship, giving them a chance to advance to the knockout stages after the season.
Created, written, and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto, Naruto tells the story of protagonist Naruto Uzumaki, a teenage ninja who dreams of becoming the next Hokage. The story begins in his pre-teen years and continues through his teenage years, until he finally achieves his life goal. Naruto’s popularity was earned in an anime adaptation from October 2002 to February 2007, followed by Shippuden, which included a second season of the manga, which first aired from February 2007 to March 2017. A spin-off series about Naruto’s son, Boruto, debuted in 2016, two years after the original series ended publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump. Boruto has also received an anime adaptation, which began in April 2017 and is currently airing. Its most recent volume includes stories from Sasuke Retsuden, about the popular character Sasuke fighting a dinosaur.
Anyone interested in watching anime can watch the series, including Shippuden and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, on Hulu.
