Mononoke fans can now sport high heels
The new shoes, as mentioned, are based on the appearance of the mysterious Apothecary, the main character of Mononoke. This includes a bow on the back of the shoe that evokes the Medicine Seller’s hair and bandana, a tassel that recalls the character’s chap crest, and the rest of the shoe that resembles the character’s kimono. The Medicine Seller also has a second form inspired by another shoe Mayla produced. The yellow and beige leg outfit has the same logos on the base as the one Sports Medicine Seller has on the body in its alternate form.
These are just some examples of shoes made to honor anime. Recently, iconic hero Astro Boy has had an iconic fandom with themed shoes. Pre-orders for the Mononoke shoes are open from December 12, 2023 to January 12, 2024. Now available for purchase, they cost more than the average prescription, with a retail price of 29,700 yen — a little over $200, which seems like a reasonable price for such an elegant and eye-catching shoe.

Mononoke is a modern avant-garde classic anime
Toei’s Mononoke was originally released in 2007. Although the name may recall the classic Hayao Miyazaki film Princess Mononoke, it is actually a spin-off of the Aykashi: Samurai Horror Tales series. The pilot stories have the Medicine Seller confronting and fighting various ayakashi spirits. The series is notably written by Chiaki J. Konaka (also known for other creative works such as Serial Experiments Lain, the noir mecha series The Big O, and the vampire action/horror film Hellsing.
Kenji Nakamura is the series’ showrunner and he previously worked on The Big O and Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. Despite being released over a decade ago, Mononoke continues to be a well-received, timeless classic. This has seen the property expanded with two manga adaptations, a stage play (with a sequel expected in 2024), and an anime sequel that’s finally coming. will be released this year.
