Warning! Contains spoilers for Kagurabachi Chapter #16 and the first season of Chainsaw Man!
In its latest chapter, one Jump Shonen The series just proved that it will be the next magazine Chainsaw man Levels reached brutally. That series is Takeru Hokazono’s Kagurabachi, which has received a lot of hype right from the first chapter. However, while much of that hype was built from the memes surrounding the series, its latest installment shows that the series itself is no joke.
The beginning of this arc of Kagurabachi introduced a group of oddball government officials who seemed set to play a large role in the overall series. The main character Chihiro helps them plan to defeat the murderer Sojo, who possesses one of the powerful swords created by Chihiro’s father. In chapter #16, translated by Camellia Nieh with words by Phil Christie, the plan initially seems to go well, with Sojo achieving some great success.
However, he is able to quickly turn the tide, killing all members of the government task force and confronting Chihiro directly to engage in a one-on-one duel.
Kagurabachi could become Shonen Jump’s next chainsaw character
This is very reminiscent of how the hit comic series Chainsaw Man handled Demon Hunters. After introducing many of them at a dinner scene, the series later killed most of them during Katana Man’s attack on the organization. This is an unexpected twist that makes it feel like no supporting character in the series is safe and shows that Chainsaw Man is different from its more typical Shonen counterparts. In many ways, Kagurabachi pulls off this brilliant twist by making many of the characters killed more visible than demon hunters like masked Kugara.
Unfortunately for Kagurabachi, now that Chainsaw Man has pulled off a similar twist, these shocking deaths alone may not be enough to make the series popular. After its opening chapter was hyped up like a meme, it seems some readers wrote that the series wasn’t really worth their time. While it’s true that after the opening chapter, Kagurabachi got off to a bit of a slow start, its latest plot developments have really sped up the pace of the series and make it a manga that readers should try. . Hopefully the similarities to Chainsaw Man will help instead of hurt it.
Aside from its shocking nature, Kagurabachi has many differences from Chainsaw Man that set it apart.
Hopefully Kagurabachi will last long enough in Shonen Jump to become a hit
Kagurabachi is still at risk of being canceled by Shonen Jump and joins the U19 Club. This would be a shame because the latest chapter proved that the series is willing to take some interesting risks to make it more innovative than it seems at first glance. Hopefully more fans will realize how great it is Kagurabachi is and make this one of the Jump Shonen‘s next big hit.
