Theatergoers will receive photo stickers from January 13
Kodoani.com – It was confirmed today that the anime film’s cumulative domestic gross “Kitaro Tanjou: GeGeGe no Nazo” has reached two billion yen ($13.81 million) with 1.45 million views in 53 days since its release in Japan. With this achievement, the anime became the highest-grossing Japanese animated film eighth highest in 2023.
The film, titled “Kitaro’s Birth: The Enigma of GeGeGe,” was produced to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of GeGeGe no Kitaro manga creator Shigeru Mizuki. The anime is set in the 1950s and tells the story of Kitaro’s birth and the mystery surrounding his father, Medama Oyaji.
Go Koga (Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters, Gegege no Kitaro: Nihon Bakuretsu!!) is directing, with script by Hiroyuki Yoshino (Macross Frontier, World Trigger) and character designs by Touko Yatabe (assistant) director Evangelion Rebuild).
The film produced by Toei Animation opened in 253 theaters in Japan on November 17, 2023. In its first week, the anime ranked second in the weekend rankings with sales of 160 million yen (1 .08 million USD) from 111,500 viewers. With support from audiences, the film’s sales continued to increase every weekend and consistently ranked in the top 10 for eight consecutive weekends.

From January 13, moviegoers will be given a sticker sheet with four additional illustrations from the first reward to the third, drawn by the film’s character designer, Toruko Yatabe.
