The Apothecary Diaries released a special video about Maomao to celebrate Japan’s National Cat Day. The holiday began in 1987 when the Cat Day Executive Committee chose February 22, simply because its pronunciation (ni-ni-ni) sounded like a cat’s meow (nyan-nyan-nyan). Local businesses, including the anime industry, often have cat-themed activities during this holiday. That said, The Apothecary Diaries treated fans to a cute compilation video of Maomao, who not only literally translates to “cat-cat” but is also depicted with cat ears whenever excited about poisons and drugs. She is also affectionately nicknamed “Xiaomao” by the characters Gaoshun and Suiren, which means “little cat”. Watch Maomao’s Cat Day video below:

Apothecary’s Diary (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) is a Japanese light novel series written by Naruto Hyuga and illustrated by Toko Shino. Shunfunotomo is currently publishing the series. The series also has two manga adaptations: The series of the same name by Itsuki Nanao, illustrated by Nekokurage; and the series “Apothecary’s Diary: A Handbook for Solving the Mystery of Mao Mao’s Palace Monastery” by Minoji Kurata. Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan and Shogakukan’s Monthly Sunday Gene-X published them in print respectively.
TOHO Animation and OML are currently responsible for the animation production for The Apothecary Diaries series, which is expected to have a total of 24 episodes. The ongoing series is available on Netflix and Crunchyroll in select regions. New episodes are released every Saturday at 24:55 JST, while the English subtitled version is released an hour later. Crunchyroll describes the plot: Maomao lives a peaceful life with her medicine-selling father. Until one day, she was sold as a lowly servant to the emperor’s palace. But she has no intention of living a life of royal compliance. So when the royal heirs fell ill, she decided to step in and find a cure! This catches the eye of Jinshi, a handsome palace official, who promotes her. Now, she’s making a name for herself solving medical mysteries!
