Today, Apple announced Apple Intelligence, a personal intelligence system that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver incredibly useful and relevant information, starting next month in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1, with more coming in the coming months. Additionally, Apple introduced the new iPhone 16 lineup, designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence, featuring the faster, more power-efficient A18 and A18 Pro chips — making them the most advanced and capable iPhones ever.
Apple Intelligence is launching first in English (US) and will quickly expand to localized English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK in December. Apple Intelligence will support additional languages such as Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish next year.
Getting Started With Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, leveraging the power of Apple silicon to understand and generate language and images, taking action across apps and based on personal context to simplify and speed up everyday tasks while protecting users’ privacy and data security. Many of the models that power Apple Intelligence run entirely on-device. Private Cloud Computing provides the flexibility and scalability of compute capacity between on-device models and larger models running on Apple’s dedicated servers. The first set of Apple Intelligence features will be available next month, delivering experiences that are fun, intuitive, easy to use, and designed specifically to help users do the things that matter most to them.
With Writing Tools, users can refine their writing by rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text almost anywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.
Memories in the Photos app now lets users create movies they want to watch just by typing a description. Users can also use natural language to search for specific photos. Search within videos is more powerful, with the ability to find specific moments in clips. The new Cleanup tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo without accidentally changing the subject.

In the Notes and Phone apps, users can record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When you start recording a call in the Phone app, participants are automatically notified, and Apple Intelligence also creates a summary to help recall key points when the call ends.
Apple Intelligence helps users prioritize and focus on the present moment with notifications from apps. Reduce Interruptions, a new Focus feature that only shows notifications that need immediate attention, and Priority Mail in Mail, which helps users understand the content of emails and surface important messages. In users’ inboxes, summaries convey the most important information of each email instead of a preview of just the first few lines. Smart Reply in Mail automatically recognizes questions in emails and suggests quick responses, ensuring every message gets a response.
Priority Notifications display the most important information and summaries help users scan long or multiple notifications to display important details right on the Lock Screen.
Siri is now more natural, more flexible, and more deeply integrated into the system experience. Siri has an all-new design with a radiant, elegant glow that wraps around the edge of the screen when running on iPhone, iPad, or CarPlay. On the Mac, you can place Siri anywhere on the screen for easy access while you work. You can type to Siri anytime on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and switch seamlessly between text and speech when using Siri to speed up everyday tasks. With richer language understanding, Siri can understand what you mean even when you stumble over your words, and can maintain context from one request to the next. Plus, Siri’s extensive product knowledge means it can now answer thousands of questions about the features and settings of your Apple devices. You can learn everything from how to record your screen to sharing your Wi-Fi password with ease.

More Apple Intelligence features will roll out later this year and in the coming months. Image Playground will let users create fun images in seconds. Image Wand will make notes more interesting by turning rough sketches into fun images. When users circle a blank space, Image Wand will generate an image based on the context of the surrounding area. Emojis will be taken to the next level as users can create their own Genmoji by typing a description or selecting photos of friends and family members. Siri will be more powerful, providing relevant information based on the user’s personal context. Siri will be able to recognize what’s on the screen and perform hundreds of new actions in and across Apple and third-party apps. Additionally, users have the option to access ChatGPT’s vast knowledge base from a number of experiences in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, as well as the platform’s image and document understanding capabilities without having to switch between tools.
An Extraordinary Step Forward for Privacy in Artificial Intelligence
Apple Intelligence is designed to protect user privacy at every step. A key foundation of Apple Intelligence is data processing and many of the supporting models operate entirely on the device. Private Cloud Computing extends the privacy and security of Apple devices to the cloud, unlocking even more intelligence to handle complex, processing-intensive requests. Private Cloud Computing marks a fundamental breakthrough in server-based artificial intelligence. When using Private Cloud Computing, user data is never stored or shared with Apple, only used to fulfill requests. Independent experts can audit code running on Apple silicon servers to continually verify this commitment to privacy. This audit is ongoing.
Additionally, for users who choose to access ChatGPT through Siri or the Write Tool, privacy protections are built in — their IP address is masked and OpenAI does not store requests. Users can access ChatGPT for free without creating an account, and ChatGPT's data usage policies apply to those who choose to connect with their accounts.
Availability
Apple Intelligence will be available as a free software update. The first set of Apple Intelligence features will be available in beta next month in iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. More features will be available in the coming months. Apple Intelligence will be available on iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad, and Mac with M1 chip or later, with the device language and Siri set to English (US). Additional languages and platforms will be available next year.
