Pikachu’s popularity has helped it become the top Pokémon partner instead of Clefairy
While Pikachu is synonymous with the Pokémon franchise today, that wasn’t the case in the franchise’s early years. Poliwhirl and Clefairy both initially appeared to be replacements for the Pokémon’s faces. The November 22, 1999 issue of Time Magazine featured Poliwhirl front and center among other pocket monsters. Pokémon Pocket Monsters, the first manga adaptation of the Nintendo series, is a humorous series that follows Pokémon Trainer Red and his mischievous Clefairy. However, the anime featuring Ash choosing Pikachu over the original Kanto initially boosted the popularity of the electric mouse.
Natochenny also answered a fan question about how Ash could be 10 years old given the amount of time that has passed both in the series and in real life – Ash’s reign as Pokémon’s main protagonist lasted 26 years. “He’s always 10,” Natochenny said. “This is my opinion, this is not a rule, but I think everyone should be able to share the same Ash Ketchum that they grew up with with their siblings, children and grandchildren .” Natochenny is still voicing Pokémon Horizons and is also appearing in other popular anime series like Tokyo Revengers.
