Wit Studios missed it big time
A recent interview with George Wada explains why VInland Saga and Attack on Titan joined MAPPA
George Wada explained that the studio always picks a project with the intention of considering it, but circumstances got in the way when it came to Attack On Titan and Vinland Saga. Wit Studios was initially contracted to produce the first season, and then, based on DVD sales, would make a decision as to whether a second season could be made. Unfortunately, sales didn’t come until much later and Wada had to schedule other anime for the studio. He was also responsible for the studio dropping the series.
Attack On Titan and Vinland Saga were both acquired by MAPPA, a studio much larger than Wit and with more resources to wait until sales data became available. Luckily, DVD and Blu-ray sales are no longer a consideration as streaming has become the most popular method of watching anime. This has led to faster anime announcements, something that would not have been possible a few years ago. Another factor that may have played a role in them scrapping Attack On Titan was that the studio at the time was too small. Since this was their first anime and there were only 35 employees, the workload was so great that the second season aired 4 years after the first.
