The developer of the first Fallout game, Black Isle Studios, released the D&D action role-playing game Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 in 2004. And while the publisher’s bankruptcy ultimately killed the series, The title is still considered one of the best Dungeons & Dragons video games ever made.
The developers announced Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 Remaster last year. Currently, Black Isle is preparing to release this upgraded Dark Alliance 2 game on July 20 for PC, Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch as well as the latest generation Xbox and PlayStation systems.
The developers had previously announced the release time for Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 Remaster was in June, but only today confirmed the specific date. Adapted from the Dungeons & Dragons “Forgotten Realms” setting, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 allows players to choose between five adventurers with unique backgrounds, ideals and fighting styles. The hack-and-slash action RPG is played from a top-down perspective and features gameplay that some gamers will find similar to the Diablo series. Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 Remaster will retain most of the features, with the Steam version supporting online play and local co-op of the original.
The developers haven’t mentioned any other significant gameplay changes, but the remake will come with a major graphics overhaul. Although it doesn’t really look realistic, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 Remaster still has 4K resolution on the latest consoles and looks on par with Diablo 2: Resururrection in 2021. The remastered game also features Steam Remote Play and certified Steam Deck compatibility, giving PC players a variety of gaming options. It looks like Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 Remaster could be a great way to preserve the game while potentially attracting new players to this classic action RPG.
As the name suggests, Dark Alliance 2 is the sequel to Snowblind Studios’ 2001 Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. While the previous installment took place throughout the region around the Sword Coast and Western Heartlands, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 focuses on those main cities. The game’s story requires the player to save Baldur’s Gate while uncovering the fates of the previous game’s protagonists. Dark Alliance 2 also allows players to tackle main quests in different orders, and NPCs will react differently to each of the five playable characters.
Between Baldur’s Gate III, the upcoming Diablo 4, and Dark Alliance 2 Remaster, a large number of old RPG series are being revived for a new life. And while Interplay hasn’t said anything about the canceled Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 3 revival, it’s possible that the developer is still experimenting with the title. Meanwhile, D&D fans will have a remaster of Dark Alliance 2 coming soon to enjoy.
