Manga Berserk is being continued in the upcoming issue of Young Animal (13/2022), to be published on June 24. Berserk’s author, Kentaro Miura, passed away last May at the age of 54. Koji Mori will oversee close to the story, while Miura’s assistants, assembled under Studio Gaga, will provide Art for the sequel.
In a statement published by Hakusensha, the production team said that they follow a simple policy:
“Because Miura said so. The production team said that they were really touched by the messages of support from readers and promised to try and fulfill Miura’s vision for the work.”
The six chapters that will complete the “Fantasia Arc/Elf Island Chapter” will be published next, and a new one will begin after that. Credits after resumption will be “Original Works by Kentaro Miura, Manga by Studio Gaga, Supervised by Kouji Mori,” and manga book numbering will continue in order. Before his death, Miura spoke with Koji Mori (his close friend), as well as staff and editors, outlining his ideas for the story and upcoming characters. The team promises to take these into account while moving on and make sure the story is told.
Koji Mori, Miura’s close friend, also released a statement saying that he will try to watch the story until the end:
“I think people with good intuition will realize that I knew the story of Berserk all the way to the end. However, I cannot say that I can draw it because I know it. That’s because only genius Kentaro Miura could write a masterpiece like Berserk. However, a great responsibility has been placed on my head.”
He praised the talent of Miura’s assistants and said that he would only write about the details that he remembered:
“I have a message and a promise to everyone. I will recall the details as much as possible and tell the story. Also, I will only write the episodes where Miura talked to me. I won’t butcher it. I won’t write passages that I don’t remember well. I will only write the lines and stories that Miura described to me. Of course, it won’t be perfect. However, I think I can almost tell the story Miura wants to tell.”
