Bleach: An Explanation of the Zanpakutō by Captain Shunsui Kyōraku

in Anime

Shunsui Kyōraku is the Commander-in-Chief of the Gotei 13 and one of the strongest characters in Bleach. An astute tactician with an enormous amount of Reiatsu, Shunsui displays elite proficiency in standard Shinigami techniques including Kidō, Shunpo, and swordsmanship.

These properties make him all the more fearsome, and with the addition of his deadliest weapon, he’s nearly unstoppable. Shunsui’s most dangerous weapon is his Zanpakutō, Katen Kyōkotsu. With abilities that mirror Shunsui’s own, Katen Kyōkotsu is both exciting and dangerous.

What is Shunsui’s Bankai?

Shikai’s orders to Katen Kyōkotsu (Flirty Heavenly Bone Flower) were “The flower wind becomes tumultuous, the Flower God sings, the heavenly wind becomes tumultuous, the Heavenly Demon taunts.” When spoken, Shunsui’s katanas transform into dual machetes, but more than an aesthetic upgrade, Katen Kyōkotsu’s Shikai abilities allow Shunsui to bring children’s games to life. Anyone in Katen Kyōkotsu’s area of effect upon release, including Shunsui, becomes a player in the game and follows the rules of the game. The rules vary from game to game, but are all played with the understanding that “You win, you live. You lose, you die.”

Katen Kyōkotsu’s Shikai Game, Explained

Bushōgoma (Wobbly Top) simulates a gyro game in which Shunsui spins at high speed while using his two machetes. This attack can damage, disorient, and trap those caught in the high-pressure vortex created by Shunsui’s rotation. Daruma San ga Koronda (Bodhidharma Waterfall) is actually a red light game; Shunsui designates an opponent as “it” and must travel along Reiatsu’s path of their attack to “mark” (hit mercilessly) them without getting caught (attacking himself). Takaoni (Mountain Demon) literally increases the attack power of the taller one.

Irooni (Demon of Color) sees warriors declaring a color, both are only allowed to attack areas of said color on each other. Damage is increased or decreased based on the level of color declared on the declarer’s body. This rule is a double-edged sword, because in order to deal optimal damage, the declarer must choose a color compatible with his or her people, meaning that they themselves are also vulnerable to heavy damage.

In Kageoni (Shadow Demon), the loser is the shadow of the one being stepped on, a game that allows Shunsui to deal damage by attacking (stepping on) an enemy’s shadow or any shadow they’re standing on. there. He does so by traveling through a pocket dimension created in the dark from which he is attacking, giving him multiple angles of approach with a speed that makes it seem as if he has clone yourself. Kageokuri (Shadow Projection) creates a copy of the shadow of whoever is staring, with the clone’s power corresponding to that person’s Reiryoku.

The most dangerous aspect of Katen Kyōkotsu is that Shunsui can switch between games seamlessly and without warning. Focusing on one’s shadow is the only way to counter Kageoni, but this involves staring at the ball, the starting point of the Kageokuri game. Therefore, one must take into account the possibility that Shunsui attacking through Kageoni could be a clone created by Kageokuri. This was one of the countless strategies that Shunsui used. This ability to instantly switch notifications reflects children’s tendency to get bored easily, abandoning one game for another even before the end of the first game.

Get to know Shunsui’s Bankai Release: Katen Kyōkotsu Karamatsu Shinjū

Katen Kyōkotsu Karamatsu Shinjū is a Bankai release by Shunsui. Shunsui holds Katen Kyōkotsu in front of him with the blades facing down as black shadows protrude from his body while Katen Kyōkotsu’s spirit embraces him. This release and its shadow distort the environment, transforming it into what Shunsui describes as a “dark”, “lonely” and “hopeless” space. This dimensional distortion means that Shunsui must confirm that his allies are at a safe distance before activating to ensure their safety. Anyone caught in the dark and distorted space created by Katen Kyōkotsu’s Bankai release is included in a 4-act play alongside Katen Kyōkotsu’s Zanpakutō soul.

Tameraikizu no Wakachiai (Sharing Pain) is the first scene. Any injuries are shared between Shunsui and his opponent, but cannot prove fatal to either side. The second stage is Zanki no Shitone (Pillow of Shame), and in it, Shunsui’s opponent’s body is covered with marks that make them bleed profusely, as if suffering from a highly contagious disease. The third act, Dangyo no Fuchi (Abyss), plunges both Shunsui and the opponent into an ocean of despair. It was impossible to escape from this water, as its surface rose endlessly and trapped both sides until their Spiritual Energy was exhausted. Itokiribasami Chizome no Nodobue (Three Throat Slicing With Thread) is the last act, an instant killing technique. Shunsui sheathed her sword like a thread around her opponent’s fingers and throat. Shunsui pulls the thread around his opponent’s neck, chopping off their heads.

Katen Kyōkotsu Karamatsu Shinjū tells the story of a man haunted by regret. Desperate for his actions and unable to die, the man threw himself into the sea until there was nothing left. Unable to bear his mate’s terrible sight, his wife tied a thread around his neck and killed him. Shunsui serves as the play’s author and narrator, his opponent playing the male role and Katen Kyōkotsu’s Zanpakutō spirit as the female.

Shunsui’s Shikai and the deadly duality of the games it offers reflect the life of Shunsui himself, a shrewd tactician and fierce warrior despite his carefree attitude. The story of a man haunted by the regrets of Karamatsu Shinjū is the story of Shunsui living every day, carrying within him boundless guilt and sadness over the death of his brother and the execution of his mother’s death.
