Bleach: The Thousand Years of Blood – Uryu Ishida Is Uryu Ishida A True Traitor or Double Agent?

Bleach: The end of Season 1 of TYBW shows Uryu Ishida standing in front of Yhwach. Has he really betrayed his friends, or is there more to his agenda?

At the end of Bleach: A Thousand Years of Bloody Battle Part 1, the Last Quincy calling himself Uryu Ishida strode into the throne room of King Quincy, Yhwach. Uryu has a small role to play in this part, mainly urging his father, Ryūken Ishida, about Quincy’s history, perusing books and magazines detailing Quincy’s fate, or staring in a brooding fashion. . The conflict between the revived Wandenreich and the Soul Reaper is always on his mind, most likely due to the involvement of his longtime friends Ichigo Kurosaki, Orihime Inoue, and Yasutora Sado. It was clear that from the very beginning, Uryu had a conflict of interest.

Season 1 left Uryu viewers with a picture of Yhwach on a sleigh, showing him decorating his Sternritter uniform. The trailer for Season 2 mainly featured conversations from Sternritter discussing Uryu’s alleged defection to Wandenreich and the heated argument between Uryu and Ichigo. It is safe to assume that Uryu has sided with his Quincy legacy and against those he has fought with in the past. Even if this is obvious on the surface, the underlying reason for his decision is not so clear. Is Uryu meant to help Yhwach complete his mission in crushing Soul Society – or does Quincy end up acting as a double agent?

Did Uryu betray his friends in the Thousand Years of Blood?

When considering Uryu’s relationships and interactions in the previous Bleach series and the more recent Thousand Years of Blood, it’s easy to dismiss the “double agent for Soul Society” direction. Aside from Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai, Uryu showed little interest in siding with the Shinigami. Instead, he is a loyal friend of Ichigo, Orihime, and Chad, fighting alongside them with a mission in mind rather than to protect the Soul Society. His pride as a Quincy is one of the most motivating factors for him, second only to his burgeoning friendships with the main characters of the series.

After so much that the heroes have endured together, it’s hard to imagine that Uryu would turn her back on her friends. As different as he appears to be, Uryu has repeatedly demonstrated his caring nature. Like the others, he risked his life to rescue Orihime from Hueco Mundo, and he managed to prevent Hollow Ichigo from becoming a mindless beast due to the relationship they developed. After all they’ve been through together, the notion of Uryu abandoning her friends for a bit of history against Quincy’s pride seems far-fetched.

Uryu is following her own agenda chapter in Bleach

This leads to the likely conclusion that Uryu is following the same path as the late Gin Ichimaru. Gin does not serve the interests of the Soul Society by becoming Sōsuke Aizen’s right-hand man; he follows his own agenda. Gin is a double agent in his own story, intent on betraying Aizen when it is in the best interest of his plan, unconcerned with the destruction the Soul Society faces — only concerned care about the happiness of Rangiku Matsumoto. Uryu is likely to follow a similar path: serving her own needs due to Quincy’s point of pride, while also being concerned for the safety of Ichigo and the rest of her group of friends.

It’s too early to tell what Uryu’s goal in the Thousand Years of Blood is, and he may have learned something through Quincy’s diary that completely changed his ideology to suitable for Yhwach. Perhaps the inclination he is in towards his own goal is too obvious, and the hoax will be made to reveal that he truly believes in Yhwach’s wishes. Uryu will most likely become the Gin of this season, leading to a spectacular revelation of his own true loyalty — but hopefully not leading to the former double agent’s bloody ending.
