Buddy Daddies is mixing a lot of popular elements into one series, but this might not matter if the series can’t do Miri’s little justice.
Buddy Daddies is a brand new original anime series that builds on trending anime story elements. Found Family, LGBTQ+, and “anime dad” themes are all popular genres that international anime fans are currently enjoying, and Buddy Daddies has them all. Another reason Buddy Daddies has garnered so much attention is due to its superficial resemblance to Spy x Family. However, their plots and general style are different enough to prevent one from being seen as stealing the other’s ideas.
However, the most striking aspect to which these chapters will be compared is the quality of their daughter. Spy x Family’s Anya has set a new standard for how children are portrayed in anime. For many fans, Anya is the best part of the series because of her antics and obvious personality. For Buddy Daddies to have the same success, Miri would have to be equally interesting. To achieve this, there are several things the series needs to strive for and as well as many things to avoid.
Children in Anime need to strike a balance
A lot of cartoons have young children as main or supporting characters. However, they seem to be the most difficult characters to portray. Child characters are easily annoying to viewers. While this is valid, children can sometimes be seen as annoying in real life, realism needs to be balanced with likability. The toddlers in School Babysitters throw tantrums and cause mischief like many kids their age, but they also show maturity throughout the series as they experience new things. and imitate larger characters. This is in stark contrast to characters like Pan from Dragon Ball GT, who are hated for their selfish, whiny personality. She can have her moments from time to time, but most of her screen time just shows how incapable she is as a main character.
However, it can be said to be worse when the child characters do not contribute to the story or are only used as plot devices. Every anime fan knows and loves Nina from Fullmetal Alchemist, but her sole purpose in the story is to see what kind of person Edward and Alphonse might turn out to be. Used as a guinea pig in a cruel experiment, her sole purpose is to become another good thing stripped from the world by an alchemist’s pursuit of knowledge. Meanwhile, Momo from March Comes in Like a Lion is likable in every scene she’s in, but every other character in the movie has a bigger role to play than hers. She may be a fan favorite, but her contributions to the story as a whole are few and far between.
How do child characters work
One of the ways that child characters succeed in a series is to give them value in the story. Just like teen or adult characters, kids are allowed to have skill sets and traits that can turn a quest into something only they can complete. Meanwhile, the main character in Dororo is a witty, fluent child and quick thinker to get out of any situation she finds herself in. These actions move the story forward and give these very young characters a level of importance they wouldn’t have otherwise.
Miri desperately needed something like this of her own to grow as a character. It looks like this will happen, as she’s carrying a dart gun as opposed to her dad’s pistol in one particular poster. While this could imply that she’ll share Anya’s love for the careers of her parent characters, it could also hint that she’ll be in for the main part, whether intentionally or not. Since Buddy Daddies is the original title, all fans can do is watch and see how the story unfolds.
