Gamers will never see Doom 4 finished, but new footage has given a glimpse into its original content.
After more than three and a half decades, Doom is still showing the world how to make incredible first-person shooter titles. Along with other critically acclaimed titles like Half-Life, Quake, and GoldenEye 007, id Software’s original 1993 release of Doom became one of the most influential FPS games of all time. The reboot of the series from a couple of years ago has renewed great interest in the series, but a Doom game that was supposed to come out in 2016 is what fans will never get.
Many gamers are probably already aware that there is a fourth Doom game in development. However, the project was scrapped and the team turned to making the latest Doom reboot that gamers know and love. Now, some footage from the aborted Doom 4 has been unearthed and featured on the YouTube channel NoClip. The video shows several aspects from the game’s early development, including some gameplay footage, animations, and tech demonstrations, such as lighting effects and depth of field.
While overall this scrapped game will feel more like Call of Duty, many will still see elements that will persist and appear in the 2016 Doom release, such as the cinematic shows what will be the opening cutscene.
NoClip is a YouTube channel specializing in video game documentaries and behind the scenes of game development. The team was recently able to show off a clip from the canceled Half-Life “Ravenholm” project developed by Arkane Studios. As well as this latest video, some images from Doom 4 were revealed by NoClip a few months ago, showing some of the main character’s character models. This video provided an insight into the early aspects of the game, such as the monster animations and some of the images that would have been used.
With id Software currently working on a new game, we’ll have to keep an eye on updates to see if a new part of the Doom game arrives. Most would agree that the Doom reboot as well as its sequel Doom Eternal helped keep the series a success despite the decades that have passed. It will be interesting if Doom 4 is fully realized.
