With the second season of Chainsaw Man focusing on Asa, not much is known about what happened to Nayuta, but Chapter 116 has updated audiences on her condition.
The following spoilers for Chainsaw Man Chapter 116, Taste of Starfish” by Tatsuki Fujimoto, Amanda Haley, and Sabrina Heep, are now available in English through Viz Media.
Ever since Chainsaw Man’s Story of Public Safety ended, Denji’s condition has been shrouded in mystery. No one knows much about where he lived, how he paid for things, or how he lived outside of school and killing demons. What makes this especially confusing is the fact that he has to take care of the seven dogs and Makima’s reincarnation, Nayuta.
While there are some clues regarding what Denji has been up to since the story’s focus shifted, Nayuta’s fate has been left open. However, Chapter 116, “Taste of the Starfish,” finally tells readers where she is, how Denji feels about her, and even what she likes. The answers to all of this are surprising, but believable and even a little sane.
What did Denji reveal about Nayuta?
Part of what makes Nayuta’s identity so mysterious is the change in the story of the Chainsaw Man. The story now focuses on the exploits of Asa and the Demon of War as they try to find and kill the Chainsaw Man. Unfortunately for readers who want to know more about Nayuta, she’s more in the dark than they are.
Now that Denji and Asa were locked together by the Infinity Devil in an aquarium, Denji had all the time in the world to raise Nayuta. While collecting hats to sell after they exit the aquarium, he explains why he always seems to be short of cash. He mentioned having a caregiver he was smart enough to go to college, but he didn’t have the money to pay for it; he didn’t name it, but it’s likely he was talking about Nayuta. This explains why he is seen doing odd jobs and looking for cash wherever he can find it.
Denji further explains that he wants to give Nayuta a normal life, which makes sense. He grew up in debt and poverty, and even when he was taken in by the Public Safety Commission, that led to a host of problems and, more importantly, tragedies. He probably doesn’t want his guardian to go through whatever he did, so he’s doing his best to make sure she gets the childhood he never got. .
Speaking of Nayuta being Denji’s guardian, he also indirectly discussed the bond he shares with her. He describes her as like a friend or a sister. He may just be hiding Nayuta’s demonic origins from Asa, but if there’s any truth to his words, it shows how much he thinks of her and how important he is. How much he cares about her.
What will Asa do now that she knows about Nayuta?
Asa knowing about Nayuta would make her task much more difficult. She plans to turn Denji into a weapon and use him to kill the Chainsaw Man. Even if she eventually finds out that Denji is the Chainsaw Man, she still needs to consider the fact that he has a child to take care of. This could be another reason for her to look for a solution to confront the Chainsaw Man that doesn’t involve killing Denji.
The answers to those kinds of questions will have to wait until Nayuta makes her first appearance in this part of the series. When she does, it will provide more answers for Asa as well as the audience. If Chapter 116 can provide so much information and character development without her appearing, her next appearance will be a big one.
