Season 1 of Chainsaw Man has ended with a shocking new appearance that promises a more nuanced love triangle with Denji in the second season.
The following contains spoilers for Episode 12 of Chainsaw Man, “KATANA VS. CHAINSAW,” is now streaming on Crunchyroll, as well as spoilers from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga, now available in English via Viz Media.
Chainsaw Man’s villain, Denji, is quite thirsty in Season 1 of the anime. He joins the Public Safety Department not only to wipe out the Devil in Japan but also to connect with his boss, Makima. She is using this to bind him, which leads to the over-zealous 16-year-old trying to befriend Himeno and his other teammate, Power.
Thankfully, he’s grown, learning from tragedies like Himeno’s death, and realizing that he’d better be a sibling to Power. However, he’s such an impulsive avatar that it’s easy to see Denji fall in love and fall in love with the next girl who throws him a romantic look. Interestingly, a big trailer for Season 2 offers a new love triangle — and a more nuanced concern.
Chainsaw Man Season 2 promises Reze
Season 1 of Chainsaw Man ends with a young girl hiding in the dark outside Denji’s apartment, intending to catch up with him. While this person appears to be an agent of the Gun Devil, ready to complete the mission of the Samurai Sword and physically attack Denji, this is actually a mental fight. After all, this entity is none other than Reze, aka Bomb Girl, in the manga.
After learning how Denji ended up getting the best Sword in a physical battle, kicking him in and then sending the Sword to jail, a different approach was required. This is why Reze decided to pursue Denji’s mind, heart, and soul first, not underestimating him as a weapon of mass destruction. In the process, Reze became the person he fell in love with, positioning the manga for something far more dramatic than his superficial desires for testers.
Chainsaw Man’s Reze is Soulmate’s potential
Now, while Denji doesn’t know much about true love, he has connected with Reze, who befriends him and knows about his inner torment. They bond through childhood traumas, and how the world uses and discards impoverished children like them. Granted, she’s manipulating him, but Reze has a crush on Denji – especially after he tries to save her when the jigsaw mounts. That’s because he saw through the lies and realized what was the truth.
As such, he learns that Reze, for good or not, has been weaponized just like him. Coincidentally, when she belittled the sinister Makima for being a master puppet, she lied and toyed with Denji to make sure he became Japan’s law enforcer. Admittedly, Reze, being Russian, also has a political disdain for Makima, but this does not make her blindly aware of the light in Denji. She sees hope, while Makima doesn’t even try to get to know Denji on a personal level.
This is why Denji is attracted to Reze, who fills the void left by Pochita as the only relationship he holds dear. It leaves Chainsaw Man fans wondering what changes the anime will make and how Denji will evolve, expressing his true feelings for Reze versus his clearly cosmetic feelings for for Makima. Ultimately, Denji’s heart will be tested a lot in Season 2, leaving him wondering who he should trust — and whether a happy ending and sense of family is really within the realm of possibility.
