Chainsaw Man’s Special Team 4 saw sizable losses during Season 1 of the anime – but this theory suggests one member is still on the team.
The latter contains spoilers for Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga, available now in English through Viz Media’s Shonen Jump publisher, as well as Season 1 of the anime, which is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
Hirokazu Arai is one of many interesting members of the Public Safety Special Team 4, but unfortunately his time at Chainsaw Man was short-lived. He first appeared with Himeno and Hayakawa after being called to the scene to save Denji from the Leech Devil and was sent to protect the survivors of the attack along with his teammates Kobeni. However, Arai gets more attention in “Eternity Devil” when he and Kobeni lose their heads while the others find a way to face the devil.
Arai’s cowardice was short-lived, as soon as they escaped the Evil of Eternity, many hunters were targeted by the Demon of Guns. Arai was shot during this attack — but in his final moments, he saved Kobeni from a similar fate, jumping to take the bullets for her. This is the last time viewers will see Arai, but one theory is that the brave hunter lives like a villain.
The violent monster is strangely close to Kobeni
Demons are demons that have taken over human corpses, so it’s possible that after his death Arai’s body was recovered by the Public Security Agency and turned into a powerful demon. This will strengthen the Public Safety department, as many divisions have lost a lot of members after the Gun Devil attack. The Violent youkai is so strong that he wears a mask to control his power, so he’s definitely a good defense. However, after his introduction, many Chainsaw Man fans noticed the villain immediately attached to Kobeni – Arai’s former partner.
The pair first appeared together when Hayakawa called for assistance in Bomb Devil’s attack, and from this point on, the friendship blossomed. Violence often turns Kobeni into food, while she shares stories of her childhood with her new partner — just as she did with Arai. The Violent Monster even says he has more human memories than most other monsters, which would explain why they both clicked so quickly. Arai and Kobeni have a strong friendship, so Violence may have rekindled that relationship through Arai’s memories.
The violent demon took Arai’s place in the ending of episode 11
This theory has not been confirmed, but Chainsaw Man Episode 11’s ending sequence provides some solid evidence. Public Safety begins to counterattack Gun Devil’s allies, including Samurai Sword and Akane Sawatari. Three new monsters make their first appearance here: Shark Fiend Beam, Angel and Violence. During the episode’s ending, the memories of all the members of Public Safety 4 are shown in a clip.
Both living and dead members are shown, but Arai never features. Instead, Violent Monsters are shown between Kobeni and Himeno’s lightning bolts. MAPPA, the animation studio behind the Chainsaw Man adaptation, is known for using the anime’s intro and epilogue to foreshadow future plot points or insert subtle implications. Therefore, it wouldn’t be strange for the studio to use this ending to imply that Arai was turned into a Violent.
Arai and the violent monster look alike
In the end, Arai and the Violent youkai have a striking similarity. They are all young men of similar height and build, and share the same facial structure and characteristic spiky black hair. Although Arai has a distinctive scar on his cheek where the villain went missing, the demons are able to heal themselves quickly. This is why Denji is able to regrow an eye — in addition to many of his other organs and organs — after merging with Pochita.
If a demon can regrow body parts, there’s no reason why they can’t heal a simple scar. Outside of Violent’s clearly more demonic appearance, the scar is the only difference between the two scars and its disappearance can be explained. There’s no denying Arai and the Beast of Violence look alike.
There is no confirmation for this Chainsaw Man theory, but the evidence certainly indicates that Arai was turned into an enemy of Violence. Their similar appearance and association with Kobeni, aside from the subtle connotations of MAPPA, all suggest this hypothesis is correct. In many ways, Arai’s body being taken over by a demon means that he can continue to protect Kobeni, which is the good ending the demon hunter deserves.
