Chainsaw Man’s Special Team 4 has a lot of interesting personalities. Although Kobeni tends to rub the wrong way with people, it’s for good reason.
Chainsaw Man has gained a lot of fans since the manga launched in 2019, but the animated adaptation has made the franchise more and more global. Naturally, however, the more popular there is, the more disgust there is — and this is often directed toward a particular character in CSM. Public safety demon hunter Kobeni Higashiyama works with Special Team 4 along with Power, Aki Hayakawa, and Denji, but rarely receives as much positive attention as her colleagues.
Kobeni is easily intimidated, which is why her character is the most hated. People believe that because of her nervous nature, Kobeni is a nasty addition to the anime and that the series would work well without her. It’s normal to be irritated by certain characters — especially the cowardly companion — but Kobeni’s personality plays a specific role in Chainsaw Man’s story.
Kobeni acts out of emotion
Unlike most of Task Force 4, Kobeni’s emotions turned frenzied. Whenever she finds herself in an anxiety-inducing situation, her natural reaction is to hide in fear or become so confused that all common sense leaves her body. In Chainsaw Man’s “Eternal Evil” section, her frightened reaction led her to follow the devil’s orders and attempt to kill Denji, although the others were calm enough to believe that there must be one. alternative solution.
In the end, Kobeni’s confused and emotionally driven reactions ended up with her nearly killing Aki, so it’s no surprise that it was this personality that made her widely hated by audiences. She’s become known for her outbursts of anxiety and panicky approach to demon hunting, making her seem completely out of place among her Department of Public Safety colleagues. While this sometimes makes Kobeni’s character hard to swallow, there’s a hidden importance behind her terrifying nature.
Kobeni is a reality check in Chainsaw Man
While Public Safety Task Force 4 somehow looks to death while remaining calm, Kobeni acts in the most realistic way. She is new to the world of demon hunting, and has found herself in a job where she must face extremely dangerous situations. If anything, the rest of Division 4’s ability to stay calm makes them the outliers; Kobeni’s fear is a perfectly normal reaction. This acts as a kind of reality check for the audience, reminding them that everything is not right and the characters are in danger.
Without Kobeni’s supposedly outrageous reactions, audiences would never have known when Denji and his friends were in real danger. They were all so apathetic that it was hard to judge when something bad was really happening, but in Kobeni’s presence, the reality of the situation became clear. She acts as a reminder that Chainsaw Man’s universe is filled with threats and these circumstances are not normal, so reacting as if everything is fine is similarly anomalous.
Aki, Power, and Himeno have all grown too comfortable with Demon Hunting for their own sake — and Denji’s quick adaptation to a murderous lifestyle only proves how damaged his life is. Kobeni is actually the only demon hunter who reacts realistically, while the others unfortunately have adjusted to fear. Without her anxious presence, the danger these fan favorites face would never have been fully realized by audiences.
