In the Taisho period, the Pillars were an elite group of Swordsmen with outstanding combat skills and the ability to destroy the cruel demons that were raging at that time.
Anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) part 1 introduced the audience to the Pillars of adventure with Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu and Inosuke.
Iguro Obanai is one of the Pillars that appeared. Viewers may not see the Serpent Pillar present too much in the Anime, but they did see him in the Conference of the Pillars in season 1 and a short scene at the end of season 2.
Although the appearance time is small, the presence of Iguro Obanai has left a big impression on the audience not only about his strength but also about his somewhat peculiar appearance.
Snake Pillar’s dyspigmented eyes
Iguro was born with two completely different eye colors, his right eye being yellow-orange while his left eye is emerald green. Iguro has revealed that his right eye is always weaker and can hardly see clearly with this eye.
The unique eyes of the Serpent Pillar are definitely one of the characteristics that make him stand out from the rest of the Pillars.
The strange mask of Iguro Obanai
The reason behind the mask covering the Serpent’s mouth stems from his sad past. Iguro was born into a family that, according to him, is “shameless, greedy, ostentatious and ugly”.
A special thing is that the Iguro family gave birth to all girls within 370 years until he was born. As a boy, they locked Iguro Obanai in a closed room.
During his incarceration, his mother, sister, and aunt constantly cared for him, pampering him by feeding him hearty food, and wearing his finest clothes with great joy.
The excessive care in that prison-like room frightened Iguro. In his flashbacks, Iguro felt nauseous at the greasy food and pretense of his caretakers.
At night while sleeping, Iguro always heard the sound of a giant creature crawling around him. He also sensed that someone was staring so hard that it made it difficult for him to sleep.
When Iguro Obanai was 12 years old, the women of the family took him to a luxurious room with gaudy decoration. At that time, Iguro Obanai along with two other women of the clan had to kneel before a strange creature.
The creature is a demon depicted with a snake lower body while the upper body is a woman sitting on a large pedestal. Her name is Oniga.
It was Oniga who kept staring at Iguro Obanai every night. She told Iguro Obanai that she was waiting until he was older to do something important. At this point, Iguro Obanai knew well what that meant.
In fact, the Iguro Obanai family lived happily thanks to the wealth of the victims of the evil demon. To maintain their wealth, the Iguro clan needed to sacrifice babies to Oniga as it was her favorite “food”.
Since Iguro Obanai was the first boy of the clan to be born in more than 300 years with special eyes, it was rare for Oniga to fall in love with him. She wanted to wait until Iguro Obanai was older and then make him her food.
Oniga now orders the women of the clan to cut off her mouth and draw blood for her to drink. His mouth was then bandaged to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. Since then, Iguro has always worn a mask around his mouth to cover his old scar.
Kaburamaru’s companion “friend”
After having his mouth cut off, Iguro decides to escape from his own disgusting clan. He stole a hairpin and used it to break open the cell door. Every day, Iguro lives in fear for fear of being discovered.
The only thing he can trust is the small white snake that often enters his room, it’s name is Kaburamaru. In the end, Iguro Obanai successfully escaped with his friend Kaburamaru.
Unfortunately, Oniga noticed and chased after Iguro, he was almost caught and killed until the Flame Pillar Rengoku Shinjurou saved his life. At that time, Yan Chu successfully killed the evil demon.
However, before that Oniga went on a rampage and killed all 50 members of the Iguro family except him and his cousin. The cousin was deeply hurt and sad, she accused Iguro of thinking he was the cause of the family’s destruction. If the demon only ate Iguro as planned, her family wouldn’t have to die.
Even so, Iguro still had a strong desire to live. He knew no matter what, he was still a member of that “trash” family. So, Iguro made up his mind, vented his rage at wars with demons and eventually became a Pillar.
Through great events, Kaburamaru still did not leave Iguro. In subsequent appearances in Anime Demon Slayer, the audience finds that Kaburamaru is always on his shoulders and wrapped around the neck of the Serpent Pillar at all times.
The two got through the darkest times together and remained together, thus Kaburamaru became like a confidant in Iguro’s shadow.
During the battle with Muzan in chapter 194 of the Manga, Iguro saved Tanjiro from the Demon King’s powerful attack. At that time, Iguro was slashed in the eye but he still did not stop fighting because Kaburamaru was his third eye.
Iguro tried to attack because Kaburamaru was always passing on the progress of the battle to him. Kaburamaru also has the ability to read Muzan’s attacks, allowing Iguro to fight back despite being severely injured.
