Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama’s Sand Land is finally coming to English-speaking territories soon, with an expanded story and he commented on what fans can expect.
Based on his manga from the early 2000s, Sand Land is Toriyama’s first non-Dragon Ball anime series in decades. The pace is a bit different from Goku’s save the universe, more akin to Mad Max and Tank Girl, following a group of rogues in a dystopian future where the world has become a desert landscape.
An anime movie that came out last year and has now been remade into episodic form, with a few hours of additional storytelling on top. Disney Plus will host Sand Land starting March 20, and now Toriyama has commented on what’s to come.
Anime Sand Land will have thrilling action scenes
In an interview posted on the official Sand Land site, Toriyama explained how the second story was added. “The sketch I received was full of dramatic content and moved quickly from the beginning,” he said. “I came up with the background and design for a new character, Muniel, designed other characters like Ann, and suggested various plot twists and things like that. And so this sequel was completed.”
He teased that there is a lot of energy in the new episodes. “I’m sure you’ll enjoy the intense action and new world-building,” he explains. “The trio of Beelzebub, Rao and Thief have a new adventure and meet new characters.”
Anime Sand Land spans 13 episodes. The premiere had seven; The film was recut into several chapters with new scenes. Therefore, the next six episodes are new to everyone. This isn’t a particularly special anime, with compilations turning episodes into movies. In this case, it gives people a reason to watch each iteration.
Sand Land serves as a good introduction to Toriyama’s other big project this year – Dragon Ball Daima! The Dragon Ball Super sequel has Goku and the Z Fighters being turned into children by some ominous villain. We’ll let you know when you can see that. What a great year to be a Toriyama fan!
