Dragon Ball has released a self-portrait of legend Akira Toriyama, with the manga creator's “dashing and playful” side clearly on display for fans.
The official Dragon Ball website recently released a new edition of the Toriyama Archives, a daily column in which “from manga to character designs to interviews, we present a rare look yes, hard to find every day! Each image can only be viewed for 24 hours after release, so be sure to stop by whenever you can!” The March 27 edition features Toriyama in his iconic self-portrait, Robotoriyama. You can see Goku's orange-clad avatar and holding a pen with the words “2013” written on it below.

Simply titled “Self-Portrait of Akira Toriyama,” the official description reads: “Released in 2013. This self-portrait was posted on the film's official website Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods with commentary from Akira Toriyama himself. To match Goku and using the manga artist's favorite weapon, the pen, this self-portrait is both bold and playful.”
Toriyama's playful side was appreciated by those who knew him well after his death. One Piece author Eiichiro Oda said in VIZ's March 24 issue of Mangaka Musings, “Right now, he has a halo on his head and he's saying 'It's hard to be a mangaka' in when building models without a care in the world. I greet you.” He previously delved into his relationship with Toriyama in his official statement after his death, recounting the day he was first called by name, being called friends alongside Naruto's Masashi Kishimoto and their His final chat with the creator. Oda concluded: “With respect and gratitude for the creative world he left behind. I pray for his soul to rest in peace. May heaven be the joyful world you envisioned.”
