Dragon Ball staff have revealed a nearly 20-year-old illustration by Akira Toriyama of Gotenks – a combination of Goten and Trunks – whose mischievous smile and playful color scheme are considered highlights of the artwork. .
The official Dragon Ball website has released images of Gotenks as part of the long-running Toriyama Archive – a weekly showcase of rare Toriyama artworks available for 24 hours only. The illustration is from Jump Comics “Dragon Ball” Complete Edition: Volume 32, first released on March 4, 2004. Readers can check it out below.

Gotenks marks the Dragon Ball manga's first successful dance combination
The fusion of Goten and Trunks into Gotenks was the first successful instance of Fusion Dance in the Dragon Ball manga, performing the technique before Goku and Vegeta's Gogeta forms. The difficulty of the Fusion Dance meant that, even in Dragon Ball Super Chapter 102, the former couple still struggled to perform it consistently, angering fans. A Japanese professor recently explained another type of fusion in Dragon Ball – Namekian Fusion – and current research could show how humans eventually achieved the feat.

The Toriyama archive continues to highlight how the Dragon Ball creator's legacy extends into the present, showcasing the antics with which early Goku and Bulma enthralled audiences. Goku's adult design was also revealed to be a series of trial and error, with Toriyama's concept art showing different possible designs.
