Dragon Ball Z: Android 20 and Dr. Gero are really the same?

Dr. Gero and Android 20 are said to be the same person, but this contradicts the biology of the Dragon Ball franchise and Dr. Gero himself.

Although most enemies in Dragon Ball Z are aliens or extraordinary monsters, the villains in Android Saga are more technological. Created by Dr. Gero, these humanoid robots and robots are the most advanced human devices. In fact, one of them has quite a bit in common with its “author”.

Android 20 is actually Dr. Gero, who has had a brain implanted into a robot body. However, this raises a question about the 20’s true identity – namely, whether he is really considered to be the same as Dr. Gero. While their appearance may be identical, the strange biology of the Dragon Ball Universe might say otherwise.

Bulma has recognized Android 20 as Dr. Gero of the Red Ribbon Army

Dr. Gero was once a member of the Red Ribbon Army, an organization dedicated to world domination. Their plan was long ago foiled in the original Dragon Ball anime by a young Goku, who has become increasingly powerful since the face of their plot. Seeking revenge and having a passion for artificial robotic life forms, he sought to create the ultimate android fighting machines. The numbered android series was started by fellow Red Ribbon Army scientist Dr. Flappe, who himself created Frankenstein’s Monster-style Android 8 (referred to by Goku as Eighter). Gero will continue this research, making his robot powerful enough to destroy the Z Warriors.

Android 17 and 18 were once human, turned into a robot by Dr. Gero. Android 16 and 19 are purely robotic in nature, based on Gero’s deceased son and a porcelain doll. Android 19 will also complete the surgery to put Gero’s brain inside his Android 20 body, which is identical to his human form. Bulma even recognizes him as such, although this does not simplify the question of the creature’s identity. The Android 20 dub mentions Dr. Gero in the past tense, suggesting that he finds himself separate from him. Such a theory is supported by further storylines in the franchise, not to mention the return of Dr. Gero in the currently unofficial sequel.

Dr. Gero broke away from Android 20 – Cell and Majin Buu prove it

Having Gero’s looks is one thing, but completely containing his brain would seem to close the book on whether Android 20 is one and the same as his “creator”. However, having someone’s attributes, clothes, and even body doesn’t mean much in the Dragon Ball Universe, as shown by Cell and Majin Buu. Cell absorbs Android 17 and 18, but he is never considered “as” to those characters despite having their bodies inside his own. The same goes for Majin Buu, who completely cannibalizes some Z Warriors and even takes some of their physical attributes. This can be seen in the original Majin Buu becoming chubby and cheerful after eating Grand Supreme Kai or Super Buu absorbing the powerful Mystic Gohan and taking his clothes. These forms are still considered separate from any characters absorbed, so it’s easy to designate Android 20 and Dr. Gero as two individual villains.

This was pretty much confirmed in the malevolent Dragon Ball GT, where Dr. Gero and the Dr. Myuu Mutant met in Hell. Conspiring to work together, they create a villainous Android 17 combined with the real deal to become Super 17. It’s worth noting that 17’s co-creator calls himself Gero and not Android 20. Likewise, when Super 17 is against him, he is very easily defeated by the attacks he could have absorbed as Android 20. This shows that only Dr. New Gero had a soul that could be cursed and that soul died when his body stopped working after a brain transplant. So when he got out of Hell, he was just mortal Gero, not the powerful robot his brain was put inside.

Of course, this theory is disproved by the fact that the aftermath suggests that Gero’s body is of a robotic nature. It’s possible that Android 20’s physical form is the only way for Gero’s soul that was once a human to leave the Underworld. Even if that’s not the case, he never calls himself Android 20, reinforcing that the villain is gone forever. Such a development may come as a shock to Dragon Ball fans, who have always considered the two to be the same person, but it’s actually more of a fit, making the robot a true legacy of the devil’s success. Dr. Gero.
