Square Enix just released a trailer for Dragon Quest Treasures that dives into the upcoming JRPG’s treasure hunt gameplay.
Many Dragon Quest fans may have looked at the upcoming spin-off game and wondered what genre it falls under. The product isn’t quite a traditional JRPG like the main Dragon Quest series, but it isn’t named after Dragon Quest Monsters either. The new trailer will hopefully clarify what the JRPG Dragon Quest Treasures genre is and what fans can expect.
As was previously announced, the new Dragon Quest Treasures trailer confirms that the game’s protagonists are Eric and Mia. They are part of the party of Dragon Quest 11, although in Dragon Quest Treasures they are much younger and are on an unrelated adventure. Players will be transported to another world where Eric and Mia must collect an incredible amount of treasure including seven powerful Dragons.
Gameplay in Dragon Quest Treasures mainly revolves around exploring the world of Draconia. To do so, the player will have to subdue a group of monsters, each with their own unique abilities. These abilities are not only useful in combat against endless enemies spread across the world, but are also key to moving around in the game world. Monsters can help the player overcome many obstacles that will prevent the player from progressing and collecting hidden treasures in the world.
When players aren’t exploring Draconia and searching for treasure, they’re building a base for their party. At the base, the treasure will be appraised and added to the group’s vault. Team ranking will unlock new areas of the base, including ways to recruit monsters, store them, or send them on treasure-collecting quests. The game doesn’t have to be a base building game, but it should have all the necessary features.
Suffice it to say, even though the title isn’t named after the Dragon Quest Monsters sub-series, Dragon Quest Treasures is probably considered the best successor to those games. There is a mode to tame and battle monsters, even if the game’s goal is more focused on exploration and treasure hunting.
For Dragon Quest fans who want something more action-packed, but still simple in the way Square Enix’s Dragon Quest series has done so successfully, Dragon Quest Treasures offers an engaging new experience. The game features the taming and monster-collecting elements of Dragon Quest Monsters, but it’s the exploration elements that distinguish the product itself from other games.
