Everything is fine is the perfect dark horror read

The horror genre has expanded to more than simply scares and gore. One of the more terrifying forms of the genre is psychological horror, more sophisticated yet equally terrifying. Take, for example, Mike Birchall’s webtoon Everything Is Fine.

If you look at the cover on Webtoon, you might mistake Everything Is Fine for a cute cat story. In fact, it’s much scarier.

Everything is fine about what?

In a beautiful and peaceful neighborhood, a couple named Sam and Maggie live with their dog Winston. On the surface, everything looks normal — except Sam and Maggie aren’t completely normal. Everything from the neck down looks like a man and a woman, but instead of human heads, they possess giant cat heads. It is never explained why the characters look like this; it was simply accepted as the norm, making it incredibly unsettling.

And that’s just the beginning. Read on, you discover things are clearly not right in Everything Is Fine. They deliberately ignored that Winston was long dead. The sayings seem innocuous and carry a dark meaning: One wrong move, Sam and Maggie’s lives will be in danger.

Everything Is Fine Shares Elements With 1984

The Webtoon Everything Is Fine bears some resemblance to George Orwell’s 1984 novel, in which society is led by a mysterious leader named Big Brother. The governing body, known as the Party, uses a variety of surveillance methods to keep a close eye on its citizens, from two-way televisions to hidden microphones. But most dangerous is the Thought Police, which punishes those whose thoughts do not conform to British political ideals.

That’s exactly what happens in Everything Is Fine. There’s a camera outside, and although it’s not clearly shown, it’s clear that Sam and Maggie have to be careful with how they act in their own home. Their views are being controlled, so they see what the system wants them to see. Their emotions are so repressed that what should be unpleasant is met with bland concern.

There is also a character named Charlie who, like Winston in 1984, tries to rebel against the system. He builds a place in his house to escape surveillance from surveillance cameras and neighbors, and tries to find a way to help people like Maggie escape the system’s control.

In 1984, when the Party discovered someone might pose a potential threat to Ingsoc, they were secretly killed and removed from society, becoming “anonymous people”. What happened to Winston was much worse: He was dragged to Room 101, where he was tortured to the point of betraying his lover, while declaring his love and devotion to Big Brother. .

What happens in Everything Is Fine is not so different. Anyone seen as a rebel who plots to “undermine the optimal functions of society” is considered a “red-status”. Aside from the eyes turning red, the individual seems to be enduring terrible torture when reliving their worst memories. When they are in the red state, no one is allowed to admit they ever existed.

Why You Should Read Everything Is Okay

The drawings in Everything Is Fine are simple, but this only adds to the unsettling level of the story. One of the scariest aspects of this webtoon is that there are scenes where the characters say something ominous, but because of the cat’s head, their expressions don’t change at all, with only a slight shadow cast on their faces.

What makes Mike Birchall’s Everything Is Fine so good is how subtle the webtoon is. There’s a disturbing nature to the story that makes the reader uncomfortable, parallel to the experiences Maggie feels in the comics. Everyone knows something is wrong and things are not as they seem. However, no one has been able to pinpoint what it is. With so much mystery surrounding who’s behind the totalitarian system, and whether Maggie and Sam will ever make it out, it’s going to be a while before things really settle down.
