A survival open-world MMO on Arrakis called Dune: Awakening was recently revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022. Frank Herbert’s beloved novel Dune was first published in 1965 and the franchise The sci-fi epic has spawned a number of games and adaptations over the past 50 years. The franchise has also had a number of game adaptations, like the Dune: Spice Wars RTS game, and now an open-world MMO that will immerse players in the challenging Arrakis desert.
Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, a young nobleman whose father became ruler of a hostile planet called Arrakis. Also known as Dune, this planet is nearly uninhabitable but is valuable for the coveted spice that forms within its endless deserts. It was Frank Herbert who wrote the five sequels to Dune+, and his son, Brian Herbert, expanded the story further with multiple sequels. Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 adaptation of the first book has sparked renewed interest in Dune, with the filmmaker releasing a sequel in the future. An action-survival game Dune was recently teased by publisher Funcom, and now Dune: Awakening has officially been revealed.

Given the themes found in the original Frank Herbert novel, the strategy and survival video game Dune seems like an obvious way to adapt the sci-fi story. Dune: Awakening will include these elements, but the game will also spawn a multiplayer version of Arrakis, which will fundamentally change the experience. The MMO element will likely add depth to each player’s journey, with users able to join forces to survive or vie for control of Arrakis’ valuable spice. No gameplay is introduced, but Dune’s infamous sandworms are sure to make exploration especially dangerous.
Dune: Awakening promises to bring a large and realistic version of Arrakis in which players can survive and thrive. The cinematic trailer announced at Gamescom doesn’t feature any actual gameplay, but the video includes a glimpse of the giant sandworm, which is considered Dune’s signature. The planet Arrakis is notoriously hostile, and Dune: Awakening will allow players to rise from the ‘social bottom’ into a professional conqueror in challenging environments.
