A talented Studio Ghibli fan portrays the colorful and gaudy witch in Howl’s Moving Castle in a beautifully crafted work of fan art.
Stunning new Studio Ghibli fan art perfectly embodies the pompous confidence of the famous wizard in Howl’s Moving Castle.
The artwork, uploaded to Twitter, features blonde Howl, wearing his signature gold-rimmed pink outerwear. A blue gem dangled around his neck, while bright green earrings accentuated his eyes.
Howl’s Moving Castle, one of Studio Ghibli’s cinematic gems
Directed and written by famous filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, Howl’s Moving Castle made its debut in 2004 and went on to earn $236 million against a budget of $24 million. The film has also received many prestigious awards, including Best Director and Animation of the Year at the 2005 Tokyo Anime Awards and Best Screenplay at the 2007 Nebula Awards, however, while being nominated Nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2006 Academy Awards, Howl’s Moving Castle lost the category to Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.
Although nearly twenty years have passed since its premiere, Howl’s Moving Castle continues to inspire impressive works of fan-generated content. In addition to the male lead fan art above, there are other recent examples of a cosplay that thoroughly showcases Sophie’s hard-working nature and a delectable pastry that brings fiery Calcifer to life.
Of course, Studio Ghibli has been on a roll lately with more than just stunning fan art of one of its most popular characters. Most notably, the animation studio has finally announced a release date for their next big film, How Do You Live?. The film is slated to open in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023, with an international release likely shortly thereafter; however, an official international release date has yet to be confirmed at the time of writing.
Miyazaki retired (again) to make How Do You Live?, based on Yoshino Genzaburo’s novel of the same name, although the project has been in production since 2016. At a press conference near Here about the film, producer Toshio Suzuki described the scale of How Do You Live? and explain the difference between it and older movies. “Back when we did My Neighbor Totoro, we only had eight animators. Totoro we worked for eight months. [For] the current film that Hayao Miyazaki is working on, we have 60 animators, but we can only make one minute of animation a month,” he said.
Some of Studio Ghibli’s most iconic films, including Howl’s Moving Castle, are available to rent through Amazon Prime Video.
