Hisoka is a lustful, bloodthirsty clown from Meteor City. He grew up in poverty and little is known about his childhood other than his love for Bungee Gum. Illumi is the cold and reserved eldest child of the Zoldyck family. He grew up in a privileged home with a structure that could be claustrophobic. The two’s personality traits and backgrounds make them great rivals, but their tendency to cooperate suggests compatibility. Perhaps these two things just work better together.
The audience first got acquainted with this duo in the “Hunter Exam” section on Zevil Island. Gittarackur reveals herself to be Illumi, and Hisoka comments that she enjoys watching the transformation. They seem to know each other pretty well at this point, and Illumi even gave Hisoka one of her extra badges. Illumi then proceeded to bury herself, and Hisoka left to stalk more prey. They reconnect at various points throughout the series to help each other. The nature of their relationship remains elusive, just like the characters themselves. However, taking a closer look at their dialogue and understanding how these characters think can help shed some light on the situation.
Illumi and Hisoka’s first meeting will probably never be known. The first clue given to the audience was after the Hunter Exam when Illumi said that he hadn’t known Hisoka for a long time. One might guess that they met during the exam, but it’s hard to know. Illumi never had any associates other than her family. His acquaintance with Hisoka quickly suggests an instant attraction or they’ve met before. The second clue is in the “Yorknew” section; Illumi says that he has known Hisoka much longer than he knew Chrollo. Because of this, Illumi decides to help Hisoka against Spider-Man, but at the cost.
The third clue concerns a fan theory that Illumi changed her style after meeting Hisoka. Like Hisoka, Illumi wears a crop top, casual pants, and skates. Considering that Illumi is usually expressionless, this dramatic fashion is more suitable for Hisoka. Flashbacks of Illumi show him looking very different, wearing conservative clothing with much shorter hair. Even the colors were dull compared to the colorful green, red and purple he wore now. Next, there’s a flashback of young Killua, looking around six years old, with Illumi sporting considerably longer hair and a green coat. Perhaps everyone’s favorite clown inspired Illumi to try to have a little more fun and express herself.
Fans of this couple should definitely read the “Succession” section of the manga. At one point, Illumi joined Spider at Hisoka’s request. It was the spiders who searched for Illumi because they knew he was close to Hisoka. Illumi tells Chrollo about their engagement and prenuptial agreement. This goes back to the part of “York New” where Hisoka jokes, “It’s not like we’re married, just some give and take.” Hisoka is saying things that Illumi understands because he treats everything as a transaction. Illumi also describes her relationship with Hisoka as “give and take.”
Illumi likes to have full control over her situations. He uses business contracts, and when that doesn’t work, he controls with his needle. Hisoka, however, doesn’t care about structure, focusing instead on the thrill of the moment. He focuses on fighting, which he often associates with his lust. The previous agreement promised to pay if Illumi killed him. This is supposed to be a cheeky marriage, a traditional marriage, basically a contract until they part death. Illumi claims the two have to do this because he’s worried they’ll end up killing each other. Given that Hisoka is a liar or a doer, it’s hard to get along well with the controlling Illumi.
While the relationship between these supporting characters was never fully resolved, Mangaka Togashi chose to use explicit romantic terms. Therefore, it’s perfectly valid for fans to interpret it like that, as long as they remember who they’re following. Hisoka and Illumi are both engaging and interesting, but they are also violent characters that lack morals.
