Goku’s admiration for Frieza’s determination shows his dark side and desire for strong opponents. Toriyama’s dissatisfaction with the role of “just hero” Goku is clearly shown through this line. Goku’s desire to push himself rather than save others puts his status as a hero into question.
Warning: Spoilers for Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 101Super Dragon BallCreator Akira Toriyama has previously voiced some complaints about how the anime adaptation of Dragon Ball Z handles the character of Goku, but it appears that Super may be taking some steps to address this complaint, based on on a line of Goku’s dialogue in the latest chapter.
Chapter 101 of Dragon Ball Super features Goku on Beerus’s Planet, where he is watching Vegeta and Broly train together. As the two rest, Cheelai and Lemo bring out drinks, and Cheelai mentions the threat that Frieza poses, especially in his new Black Frieza form. Goku, instead of being worried, admitted to somewhat admiring Frieza’s determination, as he made it clear that he had to train extremely hard to unlock this new power.
Goku even admits it’s a thought he probably shouldn’t have, but he simply can’t help himself.
Goku’s original character wanted to be more of a fighter than a hero
In a 1997 interview translated by Dragon Ball fan site Kanzenshuu, Akira Toriyama was quoted as saying that he was “always dissatisfied with the ‘righteous hero’ type role.” [the anime] gave [Goku].” He wanted the character to be portrayed with a darker bent, where Goku’s desire for strong opponents sometimes outweighs his heroism (such as the many times Goku gave Senzu Beans to enemies strong on the rope). Goku may be the main character of the story, but that doesn’t make him a shining hero in Toriyama’s eyes.
At least this line feels like a callback to Goku’s previous depiction. Goku knows very well the terrible things Frieza did in the past and what he can do with his new powers. However, the idea of a powerful opponent like Black Frieza only excited Goku – it didn’t scare or worry him at all. Even Beerus is a bit annoyed by Goku’s attitude, reacting with disdain before using the idea to encourage Goku to continue his training. No doubt Goku’s friends on Earth wouldn’t be pleased to hear him voice his respect for Frieza either.
While Goku likely won’t see a complete change in his personality back to this darker character, it’s a sign that Toriyama hasn’t forgotten how he wanted Goku to be portrayed and to remind reminds fans that, despite his cultural status, Goku isn’t really a white knight type of hero. There will always be a part of Goku that cares more about motivating himself than saving others, and that’s enough to call into question his apparent hero status. It will be interesting to see if this aspect of Goku plays a larger role in the upcoming Black Frieza installment of the series. Super Dragon Ballbecause of Goku’s newfound respect for his greatest enemy.
