There are a lot of supernatural beings in Japanese folklore and seeing them portrayed as believable protagonists in the anime makes the show quite enjoyable. In/Spectre is one such anime that features Yokai and other supernatural beings. It was originally a Japanese novel by author Kyo Shirodaira and published by Kodansha. The anime adaptation of the novel is by Brain’s Base.
Here is a short summary of the story. Kurou Sakuragawa is a university student living in Japan. Unfortunately, he just went through a bad breakup with his longtime girlfriend. Elsewhere in the world, Kotoko Iwanaga is doing her best to maintain peace between the supernatural realm of the Yokai and the human realm.
She was kidnapped by Yokai at the age of 11 so she could become their Goddess of Wisdom. Kotoko visits Kurou in the hospital because she has developed feelings for him since the first time they met, it was two years ago when she saved his life. Kotoko also feels that there is more to Kurou than what you see.
She tells Kurou her true identity as the Goddess of Wisdom but he initially doubts her. It’s when they fight a Yokai in the library together, they discover that they both have supernatural abilities. Kurou realizes that Kotoko is actually the Goddess of Wisdom. Kotoko’s suspicions were confirmed when Kurou told her that he had powers because he ate the flesh of two Yokai.
Kotoko offers Korou to be her partner in dealing with Youkai and he agrees. Then they heard about the case of a faceless woman who went around killing people. Though the case proves to be complex and challenging, the two partners set out to stop the evil creature and restore peace in the world.
How did Part 1 of In/Spectre end?
In season 1, we can see Kotoko declare her love for Kurou and offer him to be her partner in maintaining peace between the Yokai world and humans. Soon after, they encounter the case of the ghost of the deceased teen idol Karin Nanase. Those who saw it reported that the ghost roamed around with giant steel beams that mimicked the way she died.
Kurou and Kotoko along with Saki (Kurou’s ex-girlfriend) get caught in the middle of many dangerous situations and stumble across some mysterious developments that they plan to find out in the end. But the more they investigate, the more they realize that all mysteries revolve around the ghost of the late teen idol.
As the season draws to a close, the trio discovers that it was Rikka, Kurou’s cousin, who created Nanase using her powers. She also ate Yokai’s flesh and became immortal. She created the Steel Lady Nanase so she could turn back into a human again. Season 1 sees Kotoko and Kurou work together to defeat Rikka’s evil creation, Nanase but Rikka herself manages to escape.
In/Specter Season 2 Reveal
Season 2 will see the development of Kotoko and Kurou’s relationship. Though Kurou has some feelings for Kotoko at first, it turns into something deeper as they work together to solve supernatural murders. In addition, Rikka is still on the run after the Nanase she created was defeated by Kurou and Kotoko.
The duo find themselves solving a new series of mysteries involving supernatural creatures, such as a large number of fish washed up on the shores of Totomizu because of a strange wooden doll.
