Cheating in the IELTS exam makes some Indian students laugh because they can’t speak a word of English in court, despite the IELTS 7.0.
A cheating case in the IELTS exam in the US is being investigated by the police. According to sources, a number of cameras were turned off during surveillance in an exam room in Gujarat state in order to facilitate this cheating.
The case was denounced in March this year starting from the US side arresting 6 Indian students illegally entering the country from Canada.
The students, mainly between the ages of 19 and 21, had to appear in court at the request of the US side. However, when they stood before the judge, they immediately became a laughing stock when no one could speak a single sentence of English. All had to rely on translators despite having very high IELTS scores, around 7.0.
4 out of 6 people arrested had IELTS test scores of 6.5-7.0 on a scale of 9. The US Consulate General in Mumbai coordinated with the police to immediately investigate this absurdity.
IELTS is a test that assesses the English proficiency of participants with 4 basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Many major universities in developed countries consider IELTS as a prerequisite for admission.
According to the investigation, all four candidates took the certification exam at a center in the town of Navsari in September 2021, all four also obtained a visa to Canada in March.
“The administrators of the hall in Navsari, where the exam took place, turned off the security cameras. This action is extremely suspicious.” Police officer Bhavesh Rathod, one of the officers, said.
Through the investigation, the police also discovered many other violations such as allowing people to take the test on behalf of all 7 other IELTS test centers in Gujarat state. Police also predict that as many as 1,000 other people have also cheated their IELTS results. The total amount spent to perform this behavior can be up to 1.4 million rupees ($ 17,700) per person.
