Jomsvikings: The Norse Warriors Who Inspired Vinland Saga, Explained

Vinland Saga is a popular seinen anime series based on the manga of the same name by author Makoto Yukimura, which tells the story of Thorfinn Karlsefni, the villain, and his revenge journey. Along the way, Thorfinn will fight, oppose, and side with many other people and groups, including the fearsome Jomsviking mercenary army.

In the Vinland Saga, the Jomsvikings who make a strong first impression are not reckless shore raiders seeking to plunder but military-style soldiers with unique uniforms, impeccable discipline, and a reputation for Incredible skill in medieval combat. In fact, Thorfinn had a personal connection to the Jomsviking people through both his father and mother, although he was rarely friendly with them during his travels through Viking Age Europe.

Rules, Equipment & Jomsvikings Role in Vinland Saga

Famous Jomsvikings appear scattered throughout the Vinland Saga, often as a neutral or antagonistic force to Thorfinn. Although Thorfinn’s late father, Thors, was a respected Jomsviking warrior and his mother, Helga, was the chief’s daughter, Thorfinn was never friendly with the Jomsviking and vice versa. As the Vinland Saga begins, a group of Jomsvikings led by blonde Floki arrive and ask Thors to help fight a new war, meaning the Jomsvikings are the reason Thorfinn’s happy family is torn apart. Worse still, Floki is conspiring with the villain Askeladd to kill Thors, making Thorfinn even more upset with Jomsvikings. Much later in the Vinland Saga manga, Thorfinn, Thorkell, and the other allies actually go to war with the Jomsvikings — an uphill battle that Thorfinn and even Thorkell were lucky to survive.

The Jomsvikings, unlike the other Viking raiders, all wore uniforms consisting of white cloaks, identical helmets, eye-like shields, and even the same battle ax, shaped like an eye. etched into metal. Every time the Jomsvikings appear in the Vinland Saga, they move flawlessly, impressing and intimidating everyone with well-choreographed moves to remind all who witness that they are the best in the business. Even Askeladd’s band, who had survived many battles across the British Isles, could not compare to the Jomsvikings’ top training, skill and coordination in battle.

Throughout the Vinland Saga, the Jomsviking is not Thorfinn’s main enemy but to remind fans that war and looting are highly profitable in this historical period and that everyone accepts that as a reason. of course. An elite army of mercenaries like the Jomsvikings is a product of the times, making the most of this era of chaos and bloody looting. They are a living example of what redeemed Thorfinn Karlsefni was trying to avoid, with Thorfinn’s goal being to create a safe land from war and slavery while the Jomsviking profited greatly. many of those things. In peacetime, the Jomsviking would be less businesslike and might even disband, only to come back together when the war drums sounded once more.

Historical Account of Jomsvikings in Medieval Europe

The medieval and ancient worlds were difficult to study in real life, mainly because the material was scarce and unreliable at the time. Many people and events are either completely unrecorded or described many years or even centuries later by people who have not witnessed them with their own eyes. Medieval and ancient sources are also notorious for exaggerating or distorting facts for a variety of reasons, including mixing myths and legends with reality to create a vague account of life. What it was like to live in those days. Real people, kingdoms, and battles are inexplicably intertwined with tales of dragons, gods, and armies larger than any real army could have at the time. The same is true of the Jomsvikings.

Given the scarce and uncertain documentation of the Jomsvikings, it is possible that this group never existed, or at least the Jomsvikings were much different than some accounts of their actions suggest. For example, historians cannot agree on the location of the supposed capital Jomsborg of the Jomsvikings, or indeed, whether it was a site. Few, if any major sources from this period directly describe the Jomsviking, although some Old Norse runic poems mention their battles. Whether those battles were actual historical events or the work of a medieval poet’s imagination is not entirely clear, although it is still possible that these poems actually refer to to real people and their exploits on the battlefields of medieval Europe.

Luckily for Vinland Saga fans, author Yukimura doesn’t have the pressure to be 100% accurate with history, which may not be possible. An epic and educational cartoon of the historical genre, Vinland Saga is beloved as a semi-realistic, half-fantasy work set in the Viking Age, freely blending events, legends and legends. and the author’s own imagination into something unique. The details of the Vinland Saga are certainly real, such as the existence of King Sweyn, Prince Canute, and Thorfinn, while awe-inspiring groups like Jomsvikings remind anime fans that it’s entirely true to history. shouldn’t get in the way of a good story. Yukimura’s take on the Jomsviking is entirely appropriate for manga/anime purposes, and the Jomsvikings in that anime, historically accurate or not, can still inspire Vinland Saga fans to find dig deeper into the Vikings’ real-life history and see what they can discover for themselves.
