Jujutsu Kaisen revealed more details surrounding Itadori Yuji’s mysterious family line in the recently released Chapter 208 of the manga.
The following has spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 208, “Stars and Oil, Part 4” by Gege Akutami, John Werry and Snir Aharon, available in English from Viz Media.
Jujutsu Kaisen protagonist Itadori Yuji is one of the most enigmatic characters of the series, as fans or his fellow characters don’t know much about his parents. Itadori himself even refused to give more information about his family name from his grandfather while he was on his deathbed, leaving the high school student’s background a complete secret.
Chapter 143 of the manga provided an insight into Itadori’s lineage, but since then, fans have been patiently waiting for new information. In a surprising recent revelation, Kenjaku shocked Master Tengen after the former’s battle with Yuki Tsukumo using a powerful cursed technique. This same discovery outlines the details of Kaori Itadori, helping to explain why Yuji is such a successful Jujutsu witch.
Itadori Yuji’s mother, Kaori, has a cursed jutsu
Chapter 208 of Jujutsu Kaisen, “Stars and Oil, Part 4,” saw the dramatic end of Kenjaku and Yuki’s destructive brawl. As a last-ditch attempt to stop the evil ancient witch, Yuki transformed herself into a black hole using her cursed technique, which allows her to control mass. To survive, Kenjaku is forced to deploy a new technique called the Anti-Gravity System. The sorcerer went on to explain that this was the technique of one of his previously possessed corpses – Kaori Itadori.
The Anti-Gravity System was ingrained in Kaori, meaning that before being possessed by Kenjaku, she had the ability to manipulate cursed energy. Yuji’s mother was previously thought to be an ordinary person – like his father, Jin – but Kaori has a powerful curse technique. This makes sense since Kenjaku tends to control the corpses of powerful sorcerers like Noritoshi Kamo and special-level Geto Suguru; With a technique like the Anti-Gravity System, there was no doubt that Kaori possessed a large amount of cursed energy.
Using cursed energy is inherited in Jujutsu Kaisen
It is important to note that cursed energies and cursed techniques are passed down through families. Although some generations did not inherit this ability (Maki Zenin and Toji Fushiguro were born with the same amount of cursed energy as a normal person), most of the techniques were passed down through families. . The Gojo clan prides itself on its Infinite cursed technique, with Six Eyes being the rare second technique possessed by only a handful of the clan’s ancestors. Likewise, the Zenin Clan’s 10 Shadows technique, the strongest inherited power in the family, originates from Megumi Fushiguro.
However, even if someone doesn’t inherit their family’s innate technique, they can still earn a technique of their own. As long as the user can manifest and control the cursed energy, almost anything is possible. For example, Kinji Hakari’s cursed technique was opposed by the elders of the Jujutsu guild because it was inspired by a romance manga and works in conjunction with the pachinko-themed domain. As long as the cursed energy is inherited, the techniques can be manifested later in a witch’s life.
Maybe Itadori Yuji always had cursed energy
Because his mother has a powerful curse technique and cursed energy is passed down through families, it’s possible that Yuji inherited the cursed energy from Kaori and just didn’t know about it. He doesn’t want to learn more about his parents but if he had listened to his grandfather, his integration into the world of Jujutsu might have been more comfortable.
This would explain Itadori Yuji’s relationship with Jujutsu and how easily he internalized it. Within a few days, he was able to manipulate cursed energy and was able to suppress and control Sukuna as the human vessel of the Cursed King. This was previously a plot anomaly, as even Gojo said it was a rare ability for Itadori. Now that it’s been confirmed that his mother, Kaori, has a cursed technique, Yuji’s place in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen seems to be more of a consideration.
Additionally, the anime premiere revealed that Itadori was suddenly able to see cursed spirits when they attacked his high school – much to Fushiguro’s shock. This was before he ate Sukuna’s finger, so to see curses, the sorcerer must have some innate curse energy. Now that it is known that Kaori is a cursed energy user, it can be assumed that Yuji has always had cursed energy; it just didn’t work until he fell into near-death with Fushiguro.
Knowing nothing of the hidden Jujutsu or the existence of curses and cursed energies, Itadori would never have expected to become a sorcerer. Essentially, his lack of understanding of his lineage may have prevented him from realizing he could use cursed energy. Things could change once he finds out about his past – perhaps he can even use a cursed technique of his own.
