Warning! Contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter #247!
Jujutsu Kaisen just made a touching callback to a dead hero, Nanami, that proves they still have a big impact on the series even long after their passing. This is great because death is so prevalent in Jujutsu Kaisen, that it often feels like characters are being taken down before they have a chance to reach their full potential to impact the story. This brief flashback shows that Mangak Gege Akutami was still thinking about these characters even after they were killed off.
In chapter #247, translated by John Werry with text by Snir Aharon, Yuji and Higuruma are fighting Sukuna in Shinjuku. Throughout that fight, Sukuna had the upper hand, callously pushing Yuji aside and focusing on the more threatening Higuruma and the Curse technique that had the potential to kill him. Higuruma knows this and knows that his role is just to use his sword to hit Sukuna at any cost.
At the end of the chapter, he receives a devastating blow from Sukuna but passes his Sword to Yuji so he can swing it. This reminds Yuji of Nanami’s last words“You got it from here.”
Jujutsu Kaisen’s flashback to Nanami shows that his death had meaning
This is especially poignant because of Nanami’s relationship with Yuji before his death. Nanami largely acts as Yuji’s mentor while most of the Jujutsu Society believes Yuji is dead. This causes Yuji to respect him and have an arguably closer relationship with him than with Gojo, his other mentor character. This also leaves Yuji heavily affected by Nanami’s death during the Shibuya Incident., it happened right before his eyes. Nanami’s last words to him were what he remembered from this latest chapter and applied at that time to defeat Mahito. Now they apply for another assignment.
Nanami gives her last words reluctantly at the insistence of her dead friend Haibara’s presence.
Yuji has lost many friends and allies throughout the series, from his classmate Nobara during the Shibuya Incident to his other mentor Gojo more recently in the battle against Sukuna. With all these deaths, it can be easy for fans to forget how deeply Yuji can feel these losses and how each of these characters impacts the main character’s life. As the series comes to an end, it’s great that the manga reminds readers of all the allies who didn’t make it to the end and shows that even though they’re gone, they still left an important mark on the story. story.
Nanami remains the inspiration for Yuji in Jujutsu Kaisen
The inclusion of Nanami here is especially great because fans have debated whether or not characters like Nobara are actually dead, but no one has ever done this for him. Although according to some theories, other characters may still have an impact on the story, NanamiHis remaining role is as an inspiration to Yuji and others who know him. Jujutsu Kaisen‘s latest chapter fulfills that role and gives fans an emotional throwback to boot.
