Yuta Okkotsu’s mysterious ability is finally explained when Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 178 reveals what Yuta’s Curse Technique is and how it works.
Kodoani.com – WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 178 “Sendai Colony, part 5.
Yuta Okkotsu has been an anomaly since being introduced in Episode 0 of Jujutsu Kaisen. From the enormous amount of Cursed Energy he possesses to his distant kinship with Satoru Gojo, Yuta is also one of only four Special Rank Mages recognized by the Jujutsu community. Fans have long known how strong Yuta is compared to the Jujutsu Wizards. In fact, Yuta was declared the second strongest Mage after Gojo most recently in Chapter 173.
Even so, his power remains a mystery and has never really been explained – until now. There is a lot of speculation about what Yuta’s Cursed Technique might be; some have even argued that, like Yuji Itadori, Yuta may not have a technique at all. However, it would be odd if a fearsome power like Yuta didn’t have a Curse Technique of his own – and there have certainly been hints of it in the past.
In Episode 0, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 film adaptation, Yuta was able to use Toge Inumaki’s Curse technique. It’s not clear how this could have happened and it was never really acknowledged. Some readers speculated that it must have had something to do with Yuta’s Cursed Technique, while others believed it was something he was able to do thanks to his immeasurable Cursed Energy. As it turns out, both theories are pieces of the complete answer.
As the three-way death battle between Yuta, Ryu and Takako continued, the latter deduced what Yuta’s Curse move was. She initially assumed that Yuta was just a Curse user with Shikigami Jutsu as he used the technique inherited from the Inumaki clan. However, she quickly realized that wasn’t the case as Yuta also used Dhruv’s Cursed Technique. This leads her to believe that Yuta’s technique is “Copy”, the ability to imitate someone else’s technique. While “Copying” is indeed a technique the guy uses, it’s not his Cursed Technique.
Yuta’s Curse Technique is actually Rika, and it can store Curse Energy for him. He can copy the Cursed Techniques seemingly unconditionally when connected to Rika through his ring. Furthermore, this connection brings in Rika’s supply of Cursed Energy and allows the Cursed Spirit to fully manifest. Yuta was only able to maintain a solid connection for five minutes, but these details answer some longstanding questions – while also raising new questions.
One such question is what would happen if Yuta didn’t wear her ring or if it was somehow destroyed. Will he no longer be able to copy the Cursed Technique? Exactly how important the ring is to Rika’s connection to and his abilities remains a mystery at this point. Even those abilities aren’t all he could possibly have, as Chapter 178 ends with arguably the story’s most epic case-breaker to date. Yuta, Ryu, and Takako all use their Domain Expansion at the same time.
This has never happened before in Jujutsu Kaisen . There are even two characters who have never pulled their Field Expansions at the same time, let alone three. Readers are hoping to see how this plays out and what the field names of each of these characters are. Yuta is only the second Jujutsu student after Megumi to use Field Expansion so far.
While Megumi’s Realm is still incomplete, it’s hard to imagine Yuta having the same problem. After all, drawing an incomplete Realm in this situation – against the Domain of two powerful and ancient mages – would likely overwhelm him.
