Domain Expansion is the strongest ability for both sorcerers and cursed spirits in Jujutsu Kaisen. Although many characters can use powerful techniques, only a few characters can use full domain expansion. Due to its effectiveness, it drains the user’s cursed energy, to the point that they can only use it once a day.
The only exception to the rule is Gojo Satoru, who has infinite cursed energy. Ranking a curse or witch as a special level means that they are on a completely different level from the rest. Moreover, all of them are capable of using domain extensions. This raises the question of whether domain extension is a real criterion for being a special kind.
What is domain extension in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Domain extensions are the pinnacle of jujutsu magic. It allows the user to realize their innate domain by creating a barrier to create another dimension or dimension using cursed energy. As a result, the opponent is trapped in that barrier with no way out. Each domain extension user has a unique hand sign or whatever type of signal is needed to activate the domain. This is the most powerful technique in Jujutsu Kaisen as it guarantees victory to the user when it is activated and the opponent is trapped inside.

Chimera Shadow Garden allows him to summon multiple Shikigami simultaneously and even create his own duplicate from the darkness. While these two domain extensions are not comparable to the complete ones, they are not to be underestimated. Any domain, even an incomplete domain, gives the user a great advantage in battle.
Does every Mage or Curse have the potential to use Domain Expansion?
Although the series never specifically mentions it, anyone with cursed energy has the ability to use domain expansion. That’s because domain extension is an innate technique. It is more or less an extension of the innate curse technique a sorcerer or curser has. It also depends on individual talent and ability to work hard enough to master such a difficult technique. However, there are exceptions like Yuji Itadori and Maki Zenin. In the case of the first, he was filled with cursed energy, even though it belonged to Sukuna.
Sukuna can use an innate domain while controlling Yuji’s body. However, since Yuji doesn’t have his own innate curse technique, he can’t use domain expansion. Maki is bound by the Heaven Limit, thanks to which she gains great physical strength. However, the price to pay for that power is being deprived of the cursed energy. That’s why, despite being a direct descendant of a legendary clan, Maki couldn’t use the domain expansion. Even after Maki had the ability to see cursed spirits in the manga, she still possessed negligible cursed energy.
Is a simple domain the same as an extended domain?
The basic characteristics of a simple domain are not much different from that of a domain extension. Simple fields were invented in the Heian Era for weaker wizards. Therefore, it makes perfect sense that someone like Miwa, who doesn’t yet have the talent to achieve Domain Expansion on his own, could use Simple Domain as one of his signature techniques. Is domain extension necessary to be exceptional?
In fact, having an extended field is of course necessary to become privileged. Judging by Megumi’s example, one could argue that being able to use an innate field doesn’t immediately make someone a special class.
However, the truth was that there was not a single special level magician that couldn’t use domain expansion in Jujutsu Kaisen. Special level witches are considered extremely powerful, so it’s only fair that they can use the ultimate technique before calling themselves ‘special’.
