Jujutsu Kaisen: Toji Fushiguro can't break the cycle of hatred of the Zenin

In an attempt to give his son Megumi a better childhood than his own, Toji Fushiguro may have passed on the hatred he was cursed with.

Toji Fushiguro’s impoverished childhood isn’t new news to Jujutsu Kaisen fans — it’s actually the reason why there are so many similarities between him and Maki Zenin. They both grew up without cursed energy in one of the most influential families in Jujutsu society, leaving them disgraced and mistreated by the Zenin Family. However, Maki is not the only member of the family that Toji resembles.

His son, Megumi Fushiguro, knows little about his parents, but his recent actions begin to repeat his father’s actions. The Culling game has revealed a dark side to young Fushiguro, possibly due to his harsh upbringing. Instead of saving his son from a similarly tragic childhood, Toji passed on the whirlwind of Zenin’s traumatic hatred to Megumi.

Toji wants Megumi to have a better life than him

Toji Fushiguro is one of Jujutsu Kaisen’s most complex characters, mainly because his personality is often crippled by his powers. Despite his impressive strength, Toji’s main character trait is how ruthless he really is. Fushiguro is known as the Witch Slayer, an assassin hired to bring down puppets in Jujutsu society – but he doesn’t do this to provide for his son or earn money to bring back give him a better life. Toji is an assassin because he knows he is good at killing people and makes a business out of killing people. He purposely appeared as ruthless and callous as possible in order to suppress any weakness.

This behavior is a coping mechanism for Toji to deal with never having a home or not being able to show any form of unconditional love in his life. He was considered an object for being the only Zenin born without cursed energy, and since Megumi inherited the strongest cursed technique in the Clan, he lived a very similar life. together. Toji abandoned him as a child, and thus he never had a stable home for most of his life. He was eventually acquired by Gojo Satoru, which brought stability to his life, but he clearly intended to use Megumi and his powerful curse technique. Megumi gets help from Gojo, but that’s the condition – he must grow up to be a witch and risk his life for strangers.

Toji abandons Megumi because he believes that, after his wife’s death, he can never be the father his son needs. Toji loves his son and considers him a blessing, so his heart is really in the right place. He let go of all the hurt instead of grieving his wife and raising children because that was all he had ever known, but in doing this, Toji forced Megumi into a childhood that mirrored himself.

Toji continues to abuse the Zenin causing him

Toji failed to break Zenins’ cycle of abuse, which made his character rather tragic. He is capable of love and care; The admiration he has for his wife shows his soft, vulnerable side. Toji chose to train himself to inflict pain on others because this is what his upbringing made him believe that strength is. A cycle of abuse will continue until someone breaks it, and instead of being the one to do it, Toji ends up inflicting the same trauma on Megumi, who also inherited his same flaws. ta. Megumi also runs the risk of becoming callous as he has never been taught how to deal with his emotions.

While Megumi seems to be the opposite of Toji, the pair are similar at their core. Megumi had to shoulder a lot of responsibility at a young age due to her cursed technique. Moreover, he has never had parents or a stable home, so his emotional reaction has always been to suppress himself. Megumi might break down if he thinks about how unfair his living situation is or how angry that makes him, so he doesn’t think about it at all. Because of this lack of emotional intelligence, Megumi begins to pursue Toji, becoming tough and hurting people to avoid getting hurt.

Megumi believes herself to be selfish and is aware that he picks and chooses who he kills – this is seen when he kills the unconscious Chizuru in Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sorting Game. However, Toji is also extremely self-aware and recognizes right from wrong, but this doesn’t stop him from doing bad things. The pair coped in much the same way, both using self-awareness as a lukewarm excuse to act unethically.

Megumi was wrong to kill Chizuru; he did it simply because he could. By the time he chooses to kill his opponent, the player no longer has to kill to earn points — but the young wizard still chooses to end someone’s life. Megumi’s dark side is emerging, but it’s strangely reminiscent of Toji — and both were created in the same cycle of abuse.
