Fans are eagerly waiting for Kafka Hibino and Kikoru Shinomiya to reunite Kaiju No. 8 While they'll most likely be satisfied in the next chapter, this reunion also reminds them that it'll probably be quite a while before Kafka can have a heart-to-heart talk with his childhood friend and professional superior Mina Ashiro. Obviously absent from most action/adventure shonen series these days, romance thankfully has a place in Kaiju No. 8, and so far it's only existed through the interactions between Kafka and Kikoru. Their relationship isn't anything new, but it's based on the main character archetypes used by some of the most successful romantic comedies.
Kikoru is a tsundere as she openly mocks Kafka for his obvious weakness but can't help but be amazed at how persistent he is, a reaction she tries to hide but often fails in her efforts. her strength as her blush showed through her tough exterior. Luckily, Kafka takes on the archetypal role of the clueless guy who doesn't know what's going on.
But readers haven't seen the two together since last year, and most of that time was spent fighting Kaiju Number 9. Due to massive losses in the ensuing battle, the Defense Forces' divisions The guard has been changed, effectively decoupling Kafka. and Kikoru, who had been in the same department up until that point.
Now, in chapter 67 by mangaka Naoya Matsumoto, Kikoru and Kafka are reunited. Even though they're alone, the purpose of the chapter is to emphasize how Kafka mistakenly thought his friends hated him because he was Kaiju No. 8 when in fact they've been caring and worried about him the whole time. But the chapter ends with Kikoru informing Kafka to prepare for training. While the next chapter will likely focus on how much stronger Kikoru has become after her father's death inspired her to become even stronger, hopefully there will be some cute moments between them, not only for the sake of their characters, but also for the sake of action/adventure fans who have missed out on some good romance.
But while readers at least get a reunion between Kafka and his tough-guy companion Kikoru, they're also sadly well aware that there won't be any time for him and Mina anytime soon. In fact, Kaiju No. 8 fans are likely more interested in how that moment plays out.
Kafka was devastated at the beginning of the manga when he learned that only Mina had fulfilled the contract they made as children to join the Self-Defense Forces. She is a superstar beast slayer while he is assigned the despicable task of cleaning up the corpses she and the others have killed. Kafka's eventual acceptance into the Self-Defense Forces was a big moment for him. Of course, all the moments Kafka has tried to get Mina's attention so far have resulted in disaster, although readers have once caught a glimpse of Mina giggling after reprimanding Kafka.
Kaiju No. 8 built up to the moment when Kafka was finally able to speak privately with Mina and learn what she really thought about everything that had happened since they grew up. Even though their relationship hasn't been mentioned recently, there are some fans who still remember and eagerly wait for it to be brought up again.
Some of the more desperate readers may have been paying extra close attention to the photo of Kafka's text message folder on his smartphone in chapter 67 to see if Mina was one of the many people who texted him to see if he was okay in the months Kafka didn't have his phone. But alas, she wasn't. Kaiju No. 8 fans will have to wait a little longer.
Why Kafka & Kikoru (and Others) Are Better Separated in Kaiju #8
Unity on many fronts
Kaiju No. 8 did a great job in portraying the friendship and comradeship of Kafka and Kikoru. However, in moments throughout the Second Wave Arc, when she fights No. 15 in Kaiju No. 8 chapter #83, Kikoru's flashback reminds readers that members of the Defense Forces are highly focused on becoming more trustworthy as individualsWhile Kafka is able to win many battles for Kikoru right from their first training mission together, Kikoru and the others later on, like Reno, feel so appreciated that they are trusted by Kafka that he does not feel the need to help them.
While Kafka was able to win many battles for Kikoru from their first training mission together, Kikoru and the others after that, like Reno, felt valued when they were trusted by Kafka. enough that he doesn't feel the need to help them.
However, that did not detract from the moments they were able to celebrate their achievements afterwards. Kafka witnesses Isao Shinomiya, Kikoru's father, give her a rare compliment in chapter #48, helping her shine. In these moments, Kikoru is given the space to excel as he was destined to do. She was recognized by the legendary Isao as a wise leader in the Shinagawa Neutralization Operation, where she made her father proud, a moment she shared with Kafka, even if Kikoru's plight is a classic stereotype in Kaiju No. 8.
Finally, a modest but important factor behind why they are great together, but even more important alone, is that Kafka is an excellent fan and a super fighter. mortal with Kikoru in Kaiju No. 8 — he works best as a mentor, not a lover. The most obvious reason is their significant age gap, with Kikoru being 16 years old at the start of the series and Kafka 32. Fans can happily enjoy their platonic relationship in Kaiju issue 8, where They can trust each other enough to handle their battles as they form the greatest Defense Force ever assembled.
