League of Legends gamers “declared war” on Arcane fans because of Katarina
A few days ago, Riot Games released the official trailer for the new season of League of Legends called “Welcome to Noxus”. An interesting point is that this video production unit is also the team behind the success of the movie Arcane, so the audience can quickly recognize the familiarity of the art style when watching the trailer. However, as soon as this video was released, it sparked “drama” in the League of Legends community because of details related to Katarina.
The story begins when a part of the audience watches Arcane (who doesn't play League of Legends) and expresses their love for Katarina in the trailer. It wouldn't have been meaningful if they didn't have the idea of ”associating” this assassin with another female character when they thought that Katarina in the video was quite similar to Arcane's Vi. This immediately received an extremely harsh backlash from the League of Legends gaming community when they thought it was disrespectful to the game's plot.
The reason comes from the fact that Katarina in many Riot Games titles is often built to have a complicated emotional relationship with Garen. Even in some skin lines such as Warrior Academy or the game Legend of Runeterra, Katarina and Garen are also built as a real couple. Therefore, many gamers who have been with League of Legends for a long time are ready to “declare war” on the Arcane audience mentioned above when they intend to “assign” such absurdity.
Katarina is the latest example of Arcane's negative impact on League of Legends
There is a rather “bitter” truth that Riot Games itself admits is that the success of the movie Arcane does not help League of Legends get many new players. Riot Games leaders once shared that many viewers, after watching and loving the movie Arcane, created an account and tried playing League of Legends. However, they only play 1-2 games or complete the tutorial and don't play League of Legends anymore. This unintentionally causes the amount of data that Riot has to process to increase even though the actual players have no development.
Combined with the new “drama” that broke out above in the community, Riot Games is in an even more difficult position in satisfying long-time LoL players and new audiences after Arcane. A more worrying point is that the controversy surrounding this issue still shows no signs of cooling down from both LoL players and Arcane fans. On Riot's side, hopefully they will have an announcement or some action to ease the situation soon, avoiding this tense situation from prolonging.
