Manga about chef at geisha inn in Kyoto launched in 2016, inspired by anime in 2021
Kodoani.com – This year’s 26th issue of Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine revealed on Wednesday that the manga Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san (Makanai in Maiko Lodge) by Aiko Koyama will be on hiatus starting with the magazine’s next issue on June 1. The magazine will announce the continuation of the manga at a later date.
The manga’s story is set in the geisha neighborhood “hanamachi” of Kyoto. Here, after the geisha finish their work late at night, they spend the night at a motel to prepare for the next day. The story revolves around Kiyo, an Aomori native who works as a chef in a geisha inn in Kyoto after finishing junior high and leaving home. She also has a friend named Sumire, who is a maiko, or geisha apprentice.
Koyama launched the manga in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine in December 2016. Shogakukan published the manga’s 19th compiled book volume on February 10. The manga won the Best Shounen Manga award during the Awards Ceremony. The 65th Shogakukan Manga in January 2020.
The series inspired an anime adaptation titled Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House. The anime premiered on NHK World with English subtitles in February 2021, and new episodes premiere once a month.
The manga that is inspiring the live-action series will premiere on Netflix worldwide this year.
