According to Sponichi, the author’s family said he was receiving medical treatment at a facility in Gunma Prefecture. In late November, he was taken to the emergency room after testing positive for COVID-19. He had pneumonia and did not return home. Funerals and farewells were held with his relatives.
After working as an assistant to Shotaro Ishinomori, he made his debut in 1969 with the shoujo manga Boyfriend Yai! (under the name of Junichiro Yamagami). He is best known for his comedic work on the Mazinger animated series in the 1970s, such as Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, and UFO Robot Grendizer. Those works are prized by some fans as legendary works because of its distinct uniqueness that sets it apart from anime. He also served as the original story creator for the 1976-1977 robot anime series, Groizer X.
