Exactly a year ago, Aniplex and ufotable confirmed that the anime project is still alive, and revealed a new video showcasing a new visual.

In 1863 as the chaotic samurai era drew to a close, Japan was divided between the pro-shogunate and the anti-shogunate. The fate of the world is at stake when an army of historical revisionists is sent from the future to change the course of history. To defeat these forces and protect true history, two swordsmen, whose souls are swords revived by the Saniwa (sage), rush to Edo. The polite and attentive Horikawa Kunihiro and the hot-tempered but skillful Izuminokami Kanesada, who serve the same master, confront the invading army along with a group of other vibrant warriors including Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, Yagen Toushirou, Tombokiri and Tsurumaru Kuninaga.
As the fate of history lies in the hands of these heroes, what will happen to the sword remains to be discovered…
Toshiyuki Shirai directs the drama at ufotable. Mitsuru Obunai, Masaru Kimura and Masayuki Kunihiro are sword fighting animators. Tatsuya Yamamura is in charge of historical research, and Kōgyoku Watanabe is overseeing the sword fight. The show features eight character designers, each handling the animation design for a different character.
“Sword Personification Training Game” Touken Ranbu takes famous swords from Japanese history and interprets them as bishōnen. Nitroplus designed the characters and scripts. The game launched in Japan in January 2015.
The franchise has also adapted two Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru spin-off anime series, a movie trilogy, and an animated compilation. The franchise has had two live-action films, a stage musical series and a stage play series, as well as various manga.
Johren released the original Touken Ranbu browser game in English in April 2021 and released the mobile version in August 2021.
