My Hero Academia: If Shoto is Zuko, then Dabi is Azula

in Anime

My Hero Academia draws inspiration from many notable sources, including how Izuku Midoriya and Hitoshi Shinso often emulate Spider-Man, while Star Wars references are all over the place, such as Gran Turin is Yoda and Jaku Hospital. Even Avatar: The Last Airbender has clearly influenced the series, mainly through the Todoroki family.

In many ways, kuudere hero Shoto Todoroki is Prince Zuko – a strong but troubled boy born into a family of rivalry with a tyrannical, fire father. Shoto even matched Zuko’s burn scars and arc of redemption. However, the Fire Nation royal family also includes the evil Princess Azula – a horrifying example of skewed talent – and she lives in My Hero Academia’s most tragic villain, Toya Todoroki.

How Toya Todoroki became Princess Azula in My Hero Academia

Members of the Todoroki family are closely related to members of the Fire Nation royal family, complete with a sadistic and selfish father, Ozai/Endeavour, a kind mother overwhelmed by it all , a conflicted but heroic son and another villainous child with the talent to turn them into a monster. If Shoto is Zuko, a mentally and physically scarred boy trying to be a true hero despite his background, then Dabi/Toya must be Azula. Shoto has a younger sister, Fuyumi, but she is a kind person, not the Azula twin. Shoto’s brother, Natsuo, is angry but harmless, which makes Toya the Princess Azula of My Hero Academia.

Both characters were born into powerful families, and they’ve shown a lot of promise with their fire-wielding abilities. Fire Lords Ozai and Endeavor both hope to turn those prodigies into truly worthy successors, but both fathers push their children too much. Princess Azula cracked from stress and even imagined her estranged mother Ursa, while Toya was overwhelmed by her own flames and suffered severe burns, nearly dying in the process. Toya and Azula are vindictive monsters who destroy both themselves and everyone around them, and this puts them in conflict with their more heroic brothers, who have not let their upbringing die. Their tyranny completely defines them.

The main difference is that Azula idolizes her father the Fire Lord and seeks to imitate his whims, while Toya despises his father and blames Endeavor for his current condition. In a way, that makes Dabi My Hero Academia the opposite Azula, but ultimately, both characters are twisted fire prodigies defined by their relationships with authoritarian fathers and their upbringing. On top of that, Toya, Shoto, Zuko, and Azula all prove that despite having the same upbringing, a person can turn out to be very different from their loved one, it’s all due to what’s on the inside and not fire and politics outside. Zuko and Shoto are always ready to be noble heroes, while Toya probably isn’t and Azula certainly isn’t.

How Azula & Toya represent the curse of talent

Many works of fiction, especially shounen anime like My Hero Academia, make a clear distinction between strength that comes from talent and strength that comes from hard work. Symbolically, shounen-style heroes start with limited or even no strength at all and must enhance themselves through practice. In this way, they practice discipline, good work ethic, patience and self-discovery, along with creativity and innovation. The examples are endless, from Izuku handling One For All to Naruto Uzumaki learning a new jutsu and Ichigo Kurosaki discovering his true zanpakuto. Even Avatar Aang, born with Raava’s soul in him, had to work hard to master the elements, with a training session titled “Bitter Work” to that effect.

Being born with talent can be a gift, but for cartoon villains and even some heroes, it’s a curse. Such characters, such as Todorokis and members of the Fire Nation royal family, are born with high expectations and are pressured all their lives to make the most of their innate talents and never commit a crime. mistake. This immense pressure corrupted Azula’s mind and led to her downfall, along with Toya’s turning into evil, and that almost happened to Shoto and Zuko. All talent and pressure come first, and that is overwhelming for many fictional or real people, while the humble training is a more gradual and rewarding experience.

However, as inner heroes, both Shoto and Zuko go through real growth from training and exploring new ideas, such as Zuko learning how to redirect lightning and learning New styles from the two surviving dragons Ran and Shaw. Azula and Toya, meanwhile, relish their immense raw talent and toss it around, eager to achieve whatever they want with that natural talent and the arrogance that comes with it. Azula paid for it, and at this rate Dabi/Toya will too. He’ll get burned again, and this time, it might stick again.
