The character Bakugo in My Hero Academia was inspired by Akira’s Tetsuo, as both characters had a controversial relationship with the main character and had similar characteristics. Despite Bakugo’s initial villainous traits, he is able to develop into a character and become more than just an obnoxious individual, eventually becoming a hero. Bakugo’s desire to become a strong hero sets him apart from Tetsuo, as he intends to use his powers to help people, unlike Tetsuo, who has never had such intentions.
My Hero Academy inspired by a variety of sources, including Western comics from DC and Marvel and Star Wars. But the series also has a lot of influence from Japanese anime, and it turns out that villain Katsuki Bakugo is one of the more anime-influenced characters, who can trace his origins to one of The most popular anime movies ever: Akira.
As a character, Bakugo is extremely hot-tempered and rude, and he has a very rocky relationship with main character Izuku “Deku” Midoriya. He is quite unlikeable in his first appearance and goes through a long and slow character development until he eventually stops hating Midoriya. These more negative traits of Bakugo are the defining elements of his personality, and it’s hard to imagine this series without Bakugo’s temper as part of it.
According to author Kohei Horikoshi, Bakugo’s villainous traits seem to have a direct connection to the character Tetsuo in 1988’s Akira.
Bakugo’s original personality was inspired by Akira’s Tetsuo
In an interview with the August 2018 issue of Toho Cinema Magazine, translated by Tumblr user Aitaikimochi, Horikoshi said that he enjoys watching Akira to get his creative juices flowing and that he finds Tetsuo, the villain of Akira, is a very cool person. and interesting characters. He said that he intentionally made Bakugo resemble Tetsuo in the movie, after paying attention to Tetsuo’s gestures and way of speaking. Horikoshi’s love for the show can be easily seen in the manga itself, especially in the recent chapters where Shigaraki’s body transforms into some form of body horror similar to Akira’s. The character of Bakugo being influenced by Tetsuo is a much more subtle example, but it’s clear the two have a lot in common.
Horikoshi: We often play Akira in the office. From the world to the characters, it’s a vast and complex work. I really like the character Tetsuo. Not only his character design, but his gestures and way of speaking are also extremely cool. That’s why I created Bakugou Katsuki in BNHA to resemble the character Tetsuo in the movie.
Tetsuo begins the series as a friend of Kaneda, the main character of Akira, and their strained relationship mirrors that between Bakugo and Midoriya quite clearly. Tetsuo also has a strong inferiority complex, which Bakugo develops towards Midoriya after he is given the Power of One for All. While Tetsuo becomes an outright villain, Bakugo manages to avoid that fate by overcoming his emotions and eventually reconciling with Midoriya. Bakugo’s desire to become a strong hero is said to be the main trait that sets him apart from Tetsuo, as Tetsuo never intended to use his powers to help people.
Horikoshi previously said that Bakugo became more popular than he expected and the character almost became a villain. If Tetsuo is truly part of the inspiration that Bakugo fans now know and love, then it makes sense that he might be a character more villainous than heroic. However, Bakugo was able to grow as a character and become more, a fact that gave him a much more interesting character arc throughout the series. It’s interesting that one of the My Hero AcademyThe most famous characters are inspired by a classic movie like Akiraand how he branched out from that inspiration to become a unique character is a testament to Horikoshi’s skill.
