Nagatoro Season 2, Episode 1 Reveals Hayase’s Hidden Dandere Side Once Again

The second season of Don’t Toy With Me proves that under all of his comedic antics, Hayase Nagatoro is, after all, insecure and vulnerable when it comes to love.

Don’t toy with me, Miss Nagatoro! Returns for another season of fun in the Winter 2023 anime season, which begins just as Season 1 ends. Mostly, Part 2 of Nagatoro! promises to be the same, with Hayase Nagatoro harassing her lover Naoto Hachioji, but Episode 1 also reminds viewers that deep inside Hayase is strangely vulnerable.

Season 2, Volume 1 is a collection of silly romantic comedy skits, like most Nagatoro! these episodes and scenes help to re-establish some of the key themes of Hayase and Naoto’s relationship. There’s some surprising emotional depth to their high school antics, including Hayase’s underlying insecurities about herself and her relationship with her shy senpai.

Hayase Nagatoro’s teaser backfired again

A recurring theme in Nagatoro! is that because of all her nasty antics and confident personality, Hayase has a tendency to self-destruct with these games and never sees that happen. She’s a character who can eat it but can’t take it, and she’s a lot more insecure than Naoto or her friends realize. Season 2, Episode 1 shows this with a restaurant scene where the girls experiment with impromptu sushi ingredient combinations, only for Hayase to come up with something really weird with a fish pregnancy theme, and you Her friends mocked her for it. Hayase felt bad about it until Naoto stepped forward to protect her, and everything was fine again. Something similar happens in the leggings scene, when Hayase asks Naoto to put on her new pair of leggings, only to shame Hayase about it and get the job done herself.

Despite her naughty and obnoxious antics with Naoto and the other students, Hayase isn’t a real sadodere, and she’s not even a hiyakasudere—one who specializes in teasing and teasing. annoy others to show their affection. On the surface, Hayase is actually a hiyakasudere, but her true feelings about herself and Naoto tell a different story. Hayase does all of this not because it’s her nature but to process her strong yet confusing romantic feelings, while expressing and hiding them.

Hayase may even fear that she is not good enough to Naoto and unattractive to him, and that she feels incredibly threatened by almost everything, including any incidents of friends her hit Naoto. On some level, Hayase can have elements of being silly, insecure, and shy about her true feelings and self-worth, and that changes everything.

When a Dandere shows a brave face

Hayase isn’t a real dandere like Shoko Komi in Komi Can’t Communication or Miku Nakano in The Quintessential Quintuplets, but Season 2, Volume 1 suggests that semi-dandere girls like Hayase take advantage of their outgoing personalities and Show a brave face, handle their overwhelming emotions with fun games as a hiyakasudere. An early scene in Season 2, Volume 1 even shows a shojo manga heroine, a girl named Ai, acting like a real prostitute at first, cowering in front of the well-meaning student council president his strong will. Then, when Ai learns something about the fearsome president, she immediately adopts a hiyakasudere character, enjoying her new-found advantage over him. The shojo manga setting is an obvious parallel to Hayase and Naoto’s relationship, aside from the fact that Naoto is a real guy, unlike the fictional student council president.

Hayase clearly doesn’t fit any of the -dere archetypes as her outer and inner personalities are in stark contrast, with her outer personality compensating for her inner personality. Even when she doesn’t act like a fool, Hayase still feels vulnerable and insecure, and she easily gets embarrassed when Naoto tries her best. Like most girls, Hayase quickly breaks down when things get romantic or intimate, and she can’t help but deviate or run away. On the surface, she doesn’t look like Shoko Komi or Miku Nakano, but deep down, she empathizes with those girls and understands how she really feels when she doesn’t show her feelings.
