Naruto creator confirms Sasuke’s original inspiration

sasuke uchiha is one of the most beloved characters in the hit series, Naruto. His character and his fight with Team 7 member Naruto is nothing short of iconic. Fans might be a little surprised to learn that Naruto’s creator, Masashi Kishimoto, actually inspired Sasuke from another hit manga and anime series: Yu Yu Hakusho.

An interview conducted in 2009 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Naruto, published in the Naruto 10th Anniversary Chronicle. The book has been fan-translated into English from Japanese, showing how much influence Yoshihiro Togashi’s works have had on Kishimoto’s hit manga. While Kishimoto was inspired by Hunter x Hunter, Sasuke was actually inspired by a character from Yu Yu Hakusho.

Sasuke and his abilities are derived from Yu Yu Hakusho’s Hiei

User X and Naruto fan @kishimotomassi shared an excerpt from the 2009 interview. The brief quote reveals that Sasuke was inspired by Yu Yu Hakusho’s Hiei. The hit series was serialized from 1990 to 1994, with an anime adaptation that aired from 1992 to 1994. Hiei specifically debuted in Chapter #20 of the manga and volume 6 of the anime. He is a skilled martial artist and swordsman, capable of using the Evil Eye, or Jagan, for additional abilities as well as an alternate form. His behavior is very similar to Sasuke’s, as Hiei is a loner and doesn’t appreciate anyone weaker than him.

A translated and expanded quote from the interview reveals more, in which Kishimoto says:

I was a huge fan of Hiei when I was just a reader, but I also used him as an inspiration when I started creating my character. At first, I couldn’t come up with a “cool” character. I didn’t know where to start so I researched one of my favorite characters: Hiei, and I succeeded in making Sasuke, the Sharingan as well as some of his other techniques inspired by him. from him.

Sasuke is known to be very strong but also very distant from his companions early on. He’s cold and calculating, though he ultimately respects the other members of Team 7 and even has a long-term relationship – and marriage – with Sakura. Hiei is very similar in that he respects his friends very much, although he doesn’t like to show it too much. He is also quite similar in appearance, having spiky black hair, sharp features, and fair skin. Sasuke’s Sharingan grants him many abilities he has honed over the years, adding to his powerful skill set.

Hiei’s Evil Eye grants him some psychic abilities, mirroring Sasuke’s Sharingan in that he has telepathy, while Sasuke is able to predict the actions of his enemies using the enhanced Chakra observation ability. his high. In addition, both have the ability to use fire abilities when Hiei takes on dragon form. Both Hiei and Sasuke can use the flamethrower technique, spewing flames towards their enemies. Put side by side, there’s no question how similar the two are. Considering the power of both, it seems that Hiei and Yu Yu Hakusho of Yu Yu Hakusho Sasuke của Naruto in the end will respect each other a lot.
