The latest trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero debuts a new form for Piccolo. Here is its name and the meaning behind it.
Kodoani.com – According to the trailer Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero latest, it looks like everyone’s favorite Namekian is getting a new form. Throughout the trailer, Piccolo powers up with a golden halo, showing a slightly new look with lighter blue skin and no wrinkles along his arms.
It’s a subtle shift in line with Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama’s approach to modern transformations. Dragon Ball Super has so far favored simple color changers like Super Saiyan God and Golden Frieza over the more complex anatomical changes seen in Dragon Ball Z. Piccolo’s changes are so subtle that many people Initial fans assumed it was just a simple change in lighting rather than an all-out transformation – but there’s more behind the new look.
The movie’s official website confirms this is indeed a new form for Piccolo – specifically Piccolo’s ”Potential Unlocked” form. The wording in Japanese is identical to Gohan’s word of transformation thanks to the Elder Kai ritual, commonly known as ”Ultimate Gohan” in the West, leading fans to call this ”Ultimate Piccolo”.
The concept of the Namekians receiving a new transformation has been the subject of speculation for years. Piccolo has long been the most popular non-Saiyan hero in Dragon Ball and was once on par with Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan in terms of strength. He was even the strongest character in the series during the ‘Android Saga’ period after merging with Kami, becoming stronger than any Super Saiyan at the time.
Sadly, since DBZ’s Piccolo ”Buu Saga” has been lagging behind his Saiyan compatriots as new Super Saiyan transformations and fusions send him to pieces. He continued his training and, as Super describes it, eventually outpaced Super Saiyan 2, but with Goku and Vegeta constantly getting new transformations, Piccolo was left too far behind to catch up.
So fans of the character have long speculated about how he could be transformed to even play field with the Saiyans. With the latest trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, it looks like this wish will be granted – and if the naming convention comes true, it will be courtesy of Elder Kai.
For the uninitiated, back in the “Buu Saga”, Elder Kai – who was sealed in the Z Sword – performed a ritual to unlock Gohan’s full inner potential, granting him a shape commonly known as ”Ultimate Gohan”. However, Ultimate Gohan’s exact mechanics have long remained a mystery. Like modern variants, its differences are subtle. His final form looks very similar to his basic form, only with more pointed hair and a closed eye contour, something the Songoku family usually only has while in Super Saiyan form.
Given the minimal difference in aesthetics and the fact that Gohan kept these changes intact in the ending of ”End of Z” ten years later, many fans believe that ”Ultimate” is the new basic form. However, Dragon Ball GT and Super complicate matters by showing Gohan transform into his Super Saiyan forms – although Ultimate makes them superfluous. Super also reviewed on whether to portray the base Gohan with his eye contour.
The issue seems to have been resolved in the ‘Tournament of Power’ section of Super, with Ultimate Gohan being described as a transformation he must exploit. At least, that’s the case in the anime – during the fight against Kefla in the manga, the distinction between the basic transformation and Ultimate Gohan is once again kept vague.
Assuming Piccolo also received his ‘Ultimate’ form with his fair skin and few wrinkles from Elder Kai, solving the mystery of how the transfiguration ritual actually works is very little. Still, Piccolo finally taking on a new form after all these years is certainly a cause for excitement and could finally allow fan-favorite Namekian to accompany his Saiyan teammates for once. again.
