Touken Ranbu Kai -Kyoden Moyuru Honnouji- is scheduled to release in April 2024, as announced with key visuals and trailer. The anime is based on the 2016 stage play adaptation called Touken Ranbu: Kyouden Moyuru Honnouji. The film will star six characters from the franchise: Mikazuki Munechika, Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, Souza Samonji, Yamanbagiri Kunihiro, Yagen Toushirou, Heshikiri Hasebe and Fudou Yukimitsu.

The series’ script was written by Kenichi Suemitsu, who also wrote the original script for the 2016 stage play Touken Ranbu.

Touken Ranbu is a franchise that first started as the online web browser game Touken Ranbu Online. The game was created by DMM and Nitroplus and launched in 2015. The game has inspired several anime adaptations, musicals, and stage plays as well as a console game. In the game, the player takes on the role of a sage Saniwa who travels back in time to defeat evil forces trying to change history. To fight these evil forces, the sage Saniwa has the ability to transform famous historical swords into a Touken Danshi. Players can summon personified historical swords, form an army, and fight against evil forces trying to change history. There are currently over 200 Touken Danshi that players can summon in the game.
