When the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack was first announced, many gamers were hoping that the pack would include Majora’s Mask at launch. These expectations were finally dashed when the publisher confirmed that the only Legend of Zelda game included in the N64 app would be Ocarina of Time. Fans quickly ran through the background data, discovering that Majora’s Mask will eventually be added along with a host of other popular games including Super Smash Bros and several Mario Party games.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is one of the most divisive games in Nintendo’s long-running action-adventure series. Players once again join Link in his quest to save the world, with the task of awakening four guardians who can prevent the moon from crashing into the quaint village of Termina. The game has a much more somber tone and presentation than previous installments in the franchise, as reflected in the gruesome transformations that Link endures while wearing one of three unique masks. .
Players were initially amazed at the sweeping changes introduced in Majora’s Mask. Although it uses much of the same content as in Ocarina of Time, which came out two years early, the game’s structure is completely unique. Set against a strict three-day deadline in the game, gamers will need to constantly rewind time to complete the game’s many side quests along with defeating the sinister Skull Kid.
While fans may be excited for another chance to play Majora’s Mask, many are concerned that the game’s update leaves much to be desired. The introduction of N64 games to Nintendo Switch Online was hampered by poor optimization and unnecessary tweaks to the original titles. It remains to be seen how Majora’s Mask runs on Nintendo’s latest console.
