Nintendo of Japan also announced a donation to those affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake
Kodoani.com – Tragedy struck the west coast of Japan at the beginning of the new year with a powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 magnitude. The earthquake devastated the Noto peninsula and killed 213 people, according to information from the Associated Press on Thursday. Luckily, like after the March 11, 2011 earthquake, communities are volunteering to assist with relief. Among the units helping with relief, there is the participation of Nintendo – a famous Japanese game company.

In a January 16 announcement, Nintendo announced that it would donate 50 million yen (about $340,000) to the Japanese Red Cross and provide free repair services on Nintendo consoles to those who affected within the next six months.
There are some regulations regarding free repairs. As noted above, the free repair period will only last six months after an area applies for disaster relief through the Japan Disaster Relief Act. Thankfully, Nintendo has linked to the Japanese government’s disaster relief page so people can confirm if they’re eligible to apply for a free repair.
Nintendo also notes on its home page that repairs will follow its service guidelines. So if a system cannot be repaired, the company will not perform that repair. Nintendo also notes that some 3DS systems are no longer repairable and that users should check to see if their 3DS system is repairable. The Wii U system and Wii U peripherals also have limitations on what can and cannot be repaired. Nintendo has provided a link for Wii U users to check out what repairs are possible. Many of Nintendo’s older consoles are also no longer available for repair, and the company has provided a link for consumers to confirm which consoles are not available for free repair.
